    • Norbert weakens but still hurricane off Mexico coast

Hurricane Norbert further weakened to a Category 1 storm in the Pacific but was still a major tempest as it headed on Thursday for Mexico's Baja California peninsula, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Norbert maximum sustained winds decreased to 90 miles per hour (150 km per hour) and could weaken even more on Friday.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall north of the city of La Paz over the weekend, likely missing a direct hit on the beach resort of Los Cabos, a popular destination for U.S. tourists.

Norbert could pummel into the agricultural states of Sonora and Sinaloa early on Sunday with heavy rains, but was not expected to cause any damage to mining interests in northern Mexico.

There are no oil installations either off the coast or on land.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Odile formed south of Norbert in the Pacific on Thursday, threatening to dump up to 8 inches (20 cm) of rains on parts of Guatemala and southern Mexico, putting the region at risk of flash floods or mudslides.

"On this track the center of the storm should move parallel to, but offshore of, the coast of southern Mexico for the next couple of days," the center said of Odile in a statement.

Odile's winds reached near 50 miles per hour (85 km per hour) and is forecasted to become a hurricane soon.

    • Hurricanes may be associated with sunspots

A recent study suggests that hurricane intensity may be linked to the number of sunspots on the Sun. A decrease in the number of sunspots may be related to an increase in hurricane intensity. After examining the past 100 year hurricane records of the United States and Caribbean, James Elsner and Thomas Jagger of Florida State University in Tallahassee conclude that their intensity may be linked to 10 to 12 year solar magnetic activity cycles. Data from the National Hurricane Center, Miami, Florida was used in the study. A recent study suggests that hurricane intensity may be linked to the number of sunspots on the Sun. When Hurricane Ike got as far north as Ohio, the media called it the “remnants” or “remains” of the storm. For millions of working-class households here, that was a poor choice of words. While the suffering in Ohio cannot compare to Texas, the damage in 84 of Ohio’s 88 counties was enough for the governor to declare a state of emergency. • Hurricane Kyle spreads rain, wind

State hit by glancing blow before storm makes landfall in Nova Scotia

MACHIAS, Maine - Fishermen moved boats to shelter from a rare burst of tropical weather along Maine's rugged eastern coast Sunday as a weakening Hurricane Kyle spun past on its way to Canada, delivering a glancing blow equivalent to a classic nor'easter that made locals yawn.

As darkness fell, the storm produced winds hard enough to jiggle road signs, cause scattered power outages and rip early-autumn leaves from trees while lashing the Maine coast with a third straight day of heavy rain. Flooding closed roads as the storm sped up the Bay of Fundy, which separates Maine and the Canadian province of New Brunswick from Nova Scotia.

Kyle made landfall Sunday night in southern Nova Scotia as a marginal Category 1 hurricane and was later downgraded to a tropical storm by the Canadian Hurricane Centre. Some 12,000 power outages were reported in the province.

    • Taiwan braces for Typhoon Jangmi

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Authorities evacuated villagers from landslide-prone areas in Taiwan and residents boarded up windows amid torrential rain and wind as Typhoon Jangmi roared toward the island Sunday.

The usually bustling capital of Taipei was eerily quiet with only a few cars on streets buffeted by the stormy weather.

CTI Television showed villagers evacuating the scenic mountain resort of Lushan in central Taiwan, clutching small bags of personal belongings. The area was badly damaged when Typhoon Sinlaku hit two weeks ago, with massive mudslides destroying at least three hotels.

    • Hurricane Kyle forms in open ocean, Maine on watch

National Hurricane Center forecasters say Hurricane Kyle has formed in the Atlantic Ocean and it's expected to pass near eastern New England.

Kyle had top sustained winds near 75 mph Saturday afternoon. The storm is moving north in the open Atlantic at 23 mph and could make landfall anywhere from Maine to Nova Scotia.

A hurricane watch is in effect for the Maine coast from Stonington north to Eastport. Hurricane conditions are possible in that area within 36 hours.

A tropical storm warning is in effect from Port Clyde south to Cape Elizabeth, an area that includes Portland.

At 5 p.m. EDT, the storm's center was located about 315 miles west-northwest of Bermuda.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

EASTPORT, Maine (AP) - A rare hurricane watch was posted for part of the Maine coast on Saturday as Tropical Storm Kyle roared north toward the region with a threat of conditions similar to one of New England's nor'easter storms.

"Hurricane season isn't over, " said Maine Emergency Management Agency director Rob McAleer. "It's been a very active season."

It was Maine's first hurricane watch in 17 years, the National Weather Service said. Elsewhere in New England, a hurricane warning was posted for Nantucket Island off the coast of Massachusetts in September 1996, according to the weather service office in Taunton, Mass.

Two to 4 inches of rain had already fallen along some coastal areas by midday Saturday and the storm was expected to deliver an additional 2 to 4 inches, said Eric Schwibs of the weather service in Gray.

At 2 p.m. EDT, Kyle was centered about 300 miles west-northwest of Bermuda and 550 miles south of Nantucket, the National Hurricane Center said in Miami.

The storm had top sustained wind near 70 mph and the potential to grow to hurricane strength. It was moving north over the open Atlantic at 20 mph, up from 15 mph during the morning.

    • Severe climate change costs frightening forecast for U.S. States, World

The economic impact of climate change will cost a number of U.S. states billions of dollars, and delaying action will raise the price tag, concludes the latest series of reports produced by the University of Maryland's Center for Integrative Environmental Research.

      Summary of state findings:

North Carolina: Most significant impact likely felt along the coastline, but damage to agriculture, forestry and manufacturing could also occur with total costs running into billions of dollars.

North Dakota: "If drought and flooding increase as predicted, crop and livestock productivity is likely to decrease. Climate change also may cause losses in the tourism industry and increase the cost of maintaining infrastructure," says the report. It also projects a decline in hydroelectric production capacity. Total losses could cost the state millions of dollars.

Pennsylvania: "Overall, climate change may create significant economic costs for infrastructure, manufacturing, water resources, and agriculture; forestry may see some economic benefits," says the CIER report. Total costs could run into billions of dollars.

Tennessee: Increases in temperature greater than the global average, a seven percent increase in precipitation, along with increases in extreme weather, are predicted for the state. The forestry sector may see some benefits from these changes, but the state's strained water resources may suffer, as may infrastructure, the hunting industry and public health. Economic losses could run into billions of dollars.

Here's an idea challenge for the Google 10 million dollar reward....think of a simple way to slow down the release of co2 into the atmosphere and to employ this all over the world. We cannot ignore this anymore. We all need to band together, nations, religions and people of all styles, to protect and repair mother earth. Protecting the planet we live on is a good reason to stop all wars and violence and to get people involved together. We are all on this planet together, so lets work together!
