    • Obama tried to sway Iraqis on Bush deal

At the same time the Bush administration was negotiating a still elusive agreement to keep the U.S. military in Iraq, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama tried to convince Iraqi leaders in private conversations that the president shouldn't be allowed to enact the deal without congressional approval.

Mr. Obama's conversations with the Iraqi leaders, confirmed to The Washington Times by his campaign aides, began just two weeks after he clinched the Democratic presidential nomination in June and stirred controversy over the appropriateness of a White House candidate's contacts with foreign governments while the sitting president is conducting a war.
Some of the specifics of the conversations remain the subject of dispute. Iraqi leaders purported to The Times that Mr. Obama urged Baghdad to delay an agreement with Mr. Bush until next year when a new president will be in office - a charge the Democratic campaign denies.

Mr. Obama spoke June 16 to Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari when he was in Washington, according to both the Iraqi Embassy in Washington and the Obama campaign. Both said the conversation was at Mr. Zebari's request and took place on the phone because Mr. Obama was traveling.

However, the two sides differ over what Mr. Obama said.

"In the conversation, the senator urged Iraq to delay the [memorandum of understanding] between Iraq and the United States until the new administration was in place," said Samir Sumaidaie, Iraq's ambassador to the United States.

He said Mr. Zebari replied that any such agreement would not bind a new administration. "The new administration will have a free hand to opt out," he said the foreign minister told Mr. Obama.

Mr. Sumaidaie did not participate in the call, he said, but stood next to Mr. Zebari during the conversation and was briefed by him immediately afterward.

The call was not recorded by either side, and Mr. Zebari did not respond to repeated telephone and e-mail messages requesting direct comment.

This is treasonous and he should be thrown in jail for this.

    • "my fellow PRISONERS..." WTF?

      "MY FELLOW PRISONERS..."

Now, I don't mean to brag, but didn't I say mccain had untreated issues pertaining to his having been a POW - those of you who read me that is?

Has mccain ever received treatment for the psychological impact it has had on him?

Wonder why mccain has a temper? (There can be many causes for it, but the fact his psychological paralysis resulting from his having been a POW has never been therapeutically treated, means the monster of that experience is still alive and well within john mccain.)

Why is this significant? People who suffer emotionally traumatic experiences generally are not capable of therapeutically counseling themselves. This is the second time I have personally observed mccain's traumatic POW experience play itself out and I am sure there are many many more instances I am unaware. He does after all, have a long standing reputation for having a temper.

The temper tantrums mccain suffers is a result of the lack of treatment. John can't help but perceive the world through this "tainted" lens of experience where he lost ALL control over himself - as a person who is kidnapped is or a young child who is abused. The effects are the same.

The evidence of this is most noticeable when mccain is at his most stressed, be it psychologically or physically. I must say, the rally where he made that unconscious slip of the tongue immediately followed the debate with Obama where he was clearly uncomfortable and appeared sickly and more aged (like grandpa) than a Presidential candidate than ever before. The next day offered him no rest and walla - the energy he invests to suppress the effects of the psychological trauma sapped from campaigning wanning, he slipped up revealing himself.

Palin is going to try to cover for him for her own ambitions sake - rather than encourage mccain to preserve the last of his few years of life on planet earth in comfort and relaxation. Instead, and although I disagree with him completely, I don't wish this on him, but he may not last the election if he doesn't take it easy.

The President of the United States MUST be psychologically and physically healthy. This is not a game of chance, this is our lives, our children lives, our grandchildren lives and the rest of our lives.

We can can have compassion for him, for what he's suffered as a result of serving our country, but making him President for it would be a disservice to us all, especially mccain - who like a good soldier, marches on. Someone tell him to rest - that the war is over!

Additionally, it is well known that an individual who suffers as mccain does, unconsciously seeks to recreate the situation which victimized him in an unconscious effort to overcome it. The President of the United States doing so will make victims of us all - and there is no amount of dead Iraqi's, insurgents, Al Queda or innocent lives lost that will quench or satisfy the "urge" to overcome ancient demons of mccain's past.

It truly is a different world than the one mccain visualizes.

    • Bush regime seeks ownership stakes in banks

Oh my, what has Congress done? Did they even read this bill? Did Obama and McCain? This is just like the Patriot Act where this government got everyone in a frenzy after 9.11 and that fascist piece of legislation that takes away our civil liberties was not even read before it was passed! This article claims the Bush regime is considering taking ownership stakes in banks with the "powers" provided to the Treasury Dept by this so called "rescue" bill that is really a bailout bill and a way to take away your freedom. And Sen. Chuck Schumer applauds it! I truly believe this Republic is now dead. People are either so panicked, apathetic, and honestly so plain stupid or politically partisan in how this all works that they cannot even see the powerplay happening right before their eyes. This government owns you lock stock and barrel now. WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE? Thomas Jefferson is rolling in his grave!

And I have to ask this question as well: Where is Al Gore in all of this? The man who spoke so passionately and eloquently as if he were the reincarnation of Thomas Jefferson about the threat the Patriot Act was to our liberties. This is the time for men and women with that sense of love of country to come forward and speak out against this. But I suppose since he endorsed Barack Obama who is now part of this takeover of our country, it would look hypocritical of him to come out and speak against it as well as Obama's love of 'clean coal'... so much for being a free man not tied to politics being able to speak your mind. Thankfully, we have men like Dennis Kucinich who will do so.

I am appalled at this obvious behind the back powerplay by this government to take advantage of our misery to take away the last vestige of freedom that remains in this country besides the Internet, which I am certain they will have as well one day and already do with their spying. The free market will be no more as our civil liberties blow away in the crumbling dust of this Republic, and I now would believe some of it was perpetuated deliberately by certain parties to bring us to this point.... and look at the timing... so close to another 'election.' Wake up out of your stupor America, you are being had. Granted, there are economic troubles but I do not believe they warrant a takeover of our markets and banks by ANY government to this extent. This sure looks like a coup to me.

    • US to appeal for more Nato troops in Afghanistan

(WTF is this image doing on the internet? ARE they baiting them or what?)

Budapest: The United States will on Thursday appeal to Nato allies to send more troops to fight Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan, despite the prospect of spending cuts because of the global financial crisis.

Defence ministers of the 26-nation alliance hold a two-day meeting in Budapest against a backdrop of a rise in violence in Afghanistan even though there has been a big increase in the size of the Nato-led international force in the past two years.

Commanders of the 50,700-strong force are seeking up to 12,000 more troops, but Washington's European allies have been reluctant to commit additional numbers.

NATO is also seeking to plug shortfalls in equipment such as helicopters and to resolve differences among member countries over U.S. calls for a more aggressive fight against the drugs trade that fuels the Taliban insurgency.

On Tuesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet agreed to allow for a boosting of German troop numbers in Afghanistan by 1,000 to up to 4,500. But Berlin has resisted Washington's calls to station troops in the insurgent-troubled south.

Washington has urged countries in southeastern Europe, including aspiring Nato members, to send more troops.

The United States plans to increase its troop strength in Afghanistan from the present 33,000, which include 13,000 under NATO command, but U.S. officials are concerned allies will see this as an excuse not to meet pledges.

"I want to make sure that everybody understands that the increases in US forces are not seen as replacements for Nato contributions. They're reinforcement," US Defense Secretary Robert Gates told reporters.

    • White House considers ownership stakes in banks

"The Bush administration is considering taking ownership stakes in a number of U.S. banks as one option it might use to deal with a serious credit crisis, an administration official said Wednesday.

This official, who spoke late Wednesday on condition of anonymity because no decision has been made, said the $700 billion rescue package passed by Congress last week allows the Treasury Department to inject fresh capital into financial institutions and get ownership shares in return.

This official said that all the new powers granted in the legislation were being considered as the administration seeks to deal with a serious credit crisis that has already caused the biggest upheavals on Wall Street in seven decades.

A decision to inject capital directly into financial institutions in return for ownership stakes would be similar to a plan announced earlier Wednesday by Britain.

Asked about the British approach, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson did not reject the idea but said he did not want to speculate on which of the new powers would be employed."

    • The Iraq war hits Wall Street

At almost $1 trillion, and counting, the Wall Street bailout will cost taxpayers as much as the Iraq war.

Barack Obama squandered the chance to lead with an alternative plan to the Wall Street bailout. Instead both Obama and McCain pushed for a plan that's not only deeply unpopular but potentially as costly as a new Iraq war. Too busy slinging mud at each other, both campaigns are ignoring the enormous significance and wide-ranging repercussions of the financial crisis, which British scholar John Gray defines as the US equivalent of the fall of the Soviet Union.

Pepe Escobar, born in Brazil is the roving correspondent for Asia Times and an analyst for The Real News Network. He's been a foreign correspondent since 1985, based in London, Milan, Los Angeles, Paris, Singapore, and Bangkok. Since the late 1990s, he has specialized in covering the arc from the Middle East to Central Asia, including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He has made frequent visits to Iran and is the author of Globalistan and also Red Zone Blues: A Snapshot of Baghdad During the Surge both published by Nimble Books in 2007.

    • COUNTERTERRORISM functions of FIRE DEPARTMENTS? Yeah.

      STRATEGIC OUTLOOK ON INTELLIGENCE

According to the FDNY, intelligence has a place in all three of its missions: prevention, preparedness, and response. For example, advance intelligence (foreknowledge) can alert firefighters responding to an incident to the proximity of volatile chemicals or potentially dangerous activities already under surveillance. Familiarity with surroundings increases firefighters’ situational awareness, improves their operational efficiency, and increases the safety of first responders and the public. Intelligence can also tell fire departments where best to deploy their limited resources on the basis of where threats are most likely to arise. And intelligence can help departments anticipate an event and thereby improve its chances of preventing it.

      Collectors of Intelligence

The FDNY has identified the following as ways in which it can produce operational intelligence. Many of them can also be adopted by fire departments across the United States. Increased coordination, integration, and communication with other public-safety agencies enhance a fire department’s ability to fulfill its core mission of protecting life.

      * Access to venues. During the course of routine building inspections, arson investigations, and responses to fire and medical emergencies, fire department personnel enjoy access to buildings generally denied outsiders. These firefighters are passive collectors, who are positioned in the normal course of their duties to observe the signs of terrorist activity and, assuming that the firefighters are properly trained, to recognize them as such. When properly shared with local law enforcement and local and national intelligence centers, this information can fill critical intelligence gaps and generate leads.

      * Access to, and knowledge of, premises storing hazardous materials. Fire department personnel regularly inspect buildings and sites where hazardous materials are stored. Being familiar with such materials and their destructive potential, fire department personnel are in a privileged position to observe and report on suspicious or unusual conditions and to educate facility managers to do the same.
      * Observation of suspicious activity. Firefighters may observe possible terrorist materials, such as equipment and planning documents, in the course of responding to an incident.
      * Detection of possible weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Because many fire department units carry equipment, including radiation detectors, capable of identifying hazardous materials, fire departments can assist in discovering materials used in a WMD or dirty bomb. With proper training, firefighters and emergency responders can become alert to physical symptoms in humans that might indicate the occurrence of a biological or chemical attack.[8]
      * Protecting critical infrastructure.

      Users of Intelligence

Intelligence provided to fire departments can be a force and awareness multiplier in a heightened threat environment. Having access to intelligence about current threats allows fire departments to focus their limited resources on increasing their training and readiness for particular scenarios.

      Intelligence Training and Sharing

The FDNY has conducted classes in identifying suspicious behavior and recognizing what might be indicators of terrorist planning.[10] Using faculty from the Combating Terrorism Center at the United States Military Academy, the FDNY has created a graduate-level executive-education program—the first of its kind in the nation—to educate fire and EMS officers (who are under FDNY supervision) about the threat terrorists pose to first responders and the cities they protect.

Sure it's good to keep stuff on the down low so that terrorists don't know every move before we make it. Classified stuff should be classified... At the same time, it's on the internet. So should we feel more comfortable knowing there are more watching out for us?

(above Iraq dug mass graves to deal with the death toll)

This isn't meant for fly-by posters. You guys skip this please.

To even begin to understand what is happening in Iraq today, it is clear that one must have clear cut knowledge of their past, I would like to take it back a couple hundred years, but I think it's like 12 pages to just do 30.... so I'll post maybe 30 odd years of past. It will clear up much of the political mess inside Iraq, the "why" of it.

Why read this? So you will know why insurgents are trying to destroy democracy. So you will understand the reason for the war and that there is much at stake. And so that you can better communicate here as well as with your senators are representatives in the house.

Don't like to read, I have some videos for you, but finish this one post please.

If you want to post with authority about the situation in Iraq, against President Bush, etc. Theory for ending it, there are a few... Read these pages so you know what happened in their past, it's neutral.

There are many that say to understand the present, one must understand the past...
      Here it is...

The source also has video. I fear some people may be "numb" to seeing this on film, as violence on TV is more dramatic and include special effects. But real slayings have no special effects.

When you stop and realize the truth in this, it's heartbreaking, and the fact that no one resists, is even worse... lambs to the slaughter, every one..

I just watched someone's tongue being cut out and my own is in pain. When it took a few wackes with a machete to get all the fingers off a young man, my hand hurts after seeing that. And the beheading was sloppy. But they didn't seem to mind.

I had to post each one in a new "post" only so it could be downloaded and accessed. I put the full disclaimer on the first one.

Thanks for reading. Watching or how ever you took in the information.
It's meant to help us all understand why and how Iraq is what it is today. Western minds don't even think in that realm.

    • The Winner of Debate II? "That One"

In Debate II, John McCain twice laid out the criteria for how the American people should judge the candidates: In tough times, we need someone with a steady hand on the tiller.

By that measure, Obama was the clear winner. He was centered where McCain was scattered. Forceful where McCain was forced. Presidential where McCain was petulant.

In the first debate, McCain wouldn't look at Obama. In this one, he referred to him as "that one." The contempt was palpable, and unpalatable.

In the run-up to the debate, McCain lowered himself into the sewer in a desperate attempt to portray Obama as dangerous, untrustworthy, a risk too big to take.

But Obama's measured reasonableness totally countered that caricature. You could fault Obama for not being particularly inspiring, but you could not miss the rock steady competence he exuded -- authoritatively delivering substantive answers to questions on the economy, health care, taxes, and foreign policy.

He scored with his history lesson, reminding voters of the economy the Republicans inherited, and how they squandered that inheritance.

He scored with his reminder of how much the war in Iraq is costing America and the enormous strain that puts on our economy -- as well as our national security.

He scored when he declared that affordable health care is a "right" of every American and not, as McCain put it, a "responsibility" of... he actually didn't specify who.

And Obama scored big when he gave voice to the vast gulf between the two candidates' -- and the two parties' -- position on the role of government in our lives, invoking JFK's commitment to put a man on the moon in 10 years as an example of what can be done in fueling a new alternative energy-based economy, and pointing out how government investment played a key role in developing the tech advances that have driven our economy for the last two decades.

McCain, like Palin last week, couldn't decide if government is the enemy or the deep-pocketed benefactor that is going to buy up all the bad mortgages in America.

Is "a government-bought house on every lot" the 21st century equivalent of "a chicken in every pot"?

McCain also provided the debate's strangest moments, twice chiding Obama for backing an "overhead projector" in a planetarium, and raising the idea of "gold-plated Cadillac" insurance policies that pay for hair transplants. Huh?

McCain also told us he knows how to fix the economy, knows how to win wars, and knows how to capture bin Laden. Is there a reason he's keeping all these a secret?
The debate ended on a question Tom Brokaw described as having "a certain Zen-like quality": "What don't you know and how will you learn it?"
Both men used the opportunity to pivot from the Moment of Zen into impassioned but familiar stump speech stories about single moms (Obama) and absent fathers (McCain), about the American Dream (Obama) and the country put first (McCain), about the need for fundamental change (Obama) and the desire for another opportunity to serve (McCain).
At the end of the debate, Brokaw asked McCain to get out of the way of his Teleprompter, so he could sign off.
Brokaw might as well have been speaking on behalf of the future: Senator McCain can you please get out of the way so we can get on with it?

George Bush has been the target of fresh jibes by Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez for doing exactly what he was criticising the socialist leader for – overriding market laws to protect the economy.

Critics say the U.S. bailout plan is an example of a double standard by the Bush administration, reports America’s McClatchy newspaper.

"If the Venezuelan government, for example, approves a law to protect consumers, they say, 'Take notice, Chavez is a tyrant!'" said Chavez, speaking in one of his recent weekly television shows.

"Or they say, 'Chavez is regulating prices. He is violating the laws of the marketplace.' How many times have they criticised me for nationalising the phone company? They say, 'The state shouldn't get involved in that.' But now they don't criticize Bush for having to nationalise (the biggest banks in the world.) Comrade Bush, how are you?"

Warming to his theme, he added: "Comrade Bush is heading toward socialism."

Nicaragua Congressman Edwin Castro agreed: "We think the Bush administration should follow the same policies that they and the International Monetary Fund have always told us to follow when we have economic problems — a structural adjustment that requires cutting government spending and reducing the role of government.”

Meanwhile, Bush said the bailout plan, that will see $700 billion of government money used to buy toxic mortgages, was necessary, although he said it stood against his personal philosophy.

    • The End of American Hegemony

America has become a pretty discouraging place. If Ronald Reagan was still with us, I wonder if he would again refer to the United States as a city on a hill, a light unto the world.

I think not. Reagan brought America back from discouragement, but it didn't stick. Subsequent administrations erased Reagan's accomplishments. Reagan defeated stagflation and ended the cold war, producing a peace dividend to be divided among taxpayers, social programs, and national debt reduction. However, without the Soviet Union as a check on neoconservative ambition, the neoconservatives launched America on an unrealistic path of world hegemony. The economic restoration that Reagan achieved was not shored up by his successors. Instead, they used the Reagan restoration to run the American economy into the ground in ways that benefitted the super rich and the military-security complex. Some of America's best jobs were offshored in order to boost share prices and executive compensation, and the financial sector was recklessly deregulated.

Americans, for the most part, will never know what happened to them, because they no longer have a free and responsible press. They have Big Brother's press. For example, on September 28, 2008, a New York Times editorial blamed the current financial crisis on "antiregulation disciples of the Reagan Revolution."

"I have a temper, to state the obvious, which I have tried to control with varying degrees of success because it does not always serve my interest or the public's." - John McCain

During last night's debate, John McCain said we need "a cool hand at the tiller," but McCain has proven to be a loose cannon. He has accosted his Congressional colleagues on both sides of the aisle on everything from the federal budget to diplomatic relations. He is known for hurling profanities rather than settling disagreements calmly. His belligerence is legendary. Even conservative Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi has said, "He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."

When someone earns the nickname "Senator Hothead," the public ought to call his character into question. McCain's propensity to explode undermines his abilities as a rational decision maker, particularly on national security issues -- which could prove disastrous considering our country is already involved in two wars.

I just want to state right here, right now that I believe Sarah Palin is not only more than qualified for the position of Vice President of the United States of America, but is also an EXCELLENT parental role model for all soccer moms and daughters to live up to.

The fact that she has had to endure the pressures of living on the border of the Soviet Union with Putin doing "fly-overs" over our magnificent state of Alaska, credit could only be given to Sarah Palin for keeping a watchful eye and Americans safe.

I've no doubt, given the opportunity, that while aerial hunting wildlife in Alaska, seeing Putin flying over, Palin would have taken aim and shot the leader of the USSR down and rid the world of that communist threat once and for all. I have no doubt at all pitbull / soccer mom wearing lipstick! More power to you WOMAN - you are strong!

You can not only bring home the bacon, you can shoot it and skin it alive, you can cook it up in a frying pan and make men cry.

I can only imagine the pride her daughters feel about their mom. It's refreshing to see her adolescent daughter being so mature, having babies and getting married and so forth. It's got to make Sarah proud and a testament to Sarah's parenting skills that her daughter is psychologically and emotionally advanced beyond her years. Just one more reason to Vote for Palin.

With the growing circle of so much love and support within the Palin family, I'm sure it won't be long before the Palin family girls bless us with more offspring - maybe even one of the boys.

My own daughter is only 8 years old, but I am so full of confidence in Sarah Palin's leadership, judgment and parenting skills that I am hoping (and encouraging) my own daughter to look to the example set by Sarah and her family for guidance and direction in her own life choices. I especially encourage my son to emulate the examples set by that first family of Alaska.

If my daughter has sex and conceives a child at say 14 or 15 years of age, I can rest easy that it isn't due to a lack of my parental guidance and discipline or that my daughter is emotionally deprived and neglected at home, but that my young daughter is emulating the fine example set forth by our Vice President, and dare I say, soon to be President of the United States.

Go Sarah Palin!!!!!! Down those "Rooskies" with brewskies Sarah Palin!!!!

      Note: heavy sarcasm.
