GOP senator: Republicans would 'love to have' Lieberman

(CNN) – Two members of the Senate’s Democratic caucus have called for Joe Lieberman to lose his committee chairmanship. On Sunday, North Dakota Sen. Byron Dorgan didn’t go that far — but did say the Connecticut senator’s actions during the campaign were “not acceptable,” as Republican Sen. Jon Kyl said the GOP would “welcome [Lieberman] with open arms.”

“…As a chairman of one of our significant committees in the Senate, not just going off and supporting a presidential candidate of the other side but also criticizing the candidate on our side, and also involving himself in a couple of Senate races on the other side,” Dorgan said on Fox News Sunday, when asked whether he thought the Democrat-turned-independent should lose the chairmanship of the Senate’s Homeland Security Committee.

“The question is, is that acceptable? The answer is no. The question, I think, mainly is what should happen as a result of that.”

The full Democratic caucus is meeting this week to vote on what penalty Lieberman may face for his decision to endorse John McCain’s presidential bid and criticize Obama. “We will hear from Sen. Lieberman, and then we’ll make a judgment,” said Dorgan. “I was concerned and was upset about what happened earlier this year. But you know what, we turn the page, we’ll make a decision about that on Tuesday.”

Arizona Sen. John Kyl, also appearing on Fox News Sunday, said the GOP would “welcome [Lieberman] with open arms… Joe is a very open-minded person. People in both caucuses love Joe because he is a great American. He’d be welcome in our conference, we’d love to have him there. And since he was of such great assistance to John McCain in this election, it would be good to have him with us.”

A friend in London just sent me this link.

In some of the poorest parts of Nigeria, where evangelical religious fervour is combined with a belief in sorcery and black magic, many thousands of children are being blamed for catastrophes, death and famine - and branded witches by powerful pastors. These children are then abandoned, tortured, starved and murdered - all in the name of Jesus Christ.

This Dispatches Special follows the work of one Englishman, 29-year-old Gary Foxcroft, who has devoted his life to helping these desperate and vulnerable children. Gary's charity, Stepping Stones Nigeria, raises funds to help Sam Itauma, who five years ago, rescued four children accused of witchcraft. He now struggles to care for over 150 in a makeshift shelter and school in the Niger Delta region called CRARN (Child Rights and Rehabilitation Network).

Gary and Sam introduce Dispatches to some of the rescued children who have been through unimaginable horrors, such as Ekemeni, aged 13, who was tied up with chicken wire and starved and beaten for two weeks, and Mary, aged 14, who was burnt with acid before her mother attempted to bury her alive. Other children display the hallmarks of witch-branding - acid burns and machete scars. Uma Eke, aged 17, has been left brain-damaged after having a three-inch nail driven into her skull.

Hospitals refuse to treat children associated with sorcery, so Sam's centre does its best to provide medical aid. As well as the physical scars, the children arrive at the shelter badly traumatised by their experiences, with many of them brain-washed into accepting they are possessed by the devil.

The parents or siblings of children torture them in an attempt to kill them or force confessions from them to admit that they are witches. As Gary remarks, the children at CRARN are the lucky ones - they're still alive.

Influential preachers from the more extreme churches brand the children witches or wizards and exploit their desperate parents by charging them exorbitant amounts of money in return for exorcising the spirits. The film features extraordinary access to some of the preachers who openly discuss their work. One preacher who calls himself 'The Bishop,' says he has made a fortune by carrying out 'deliverances' on children. He admits having killed 110 people in the past. Dispatches films him as he administers a mixture of pure alcohol, a substance known as 'African mercury' and his own blood to one child accused of witchcraft.A friend in London just sent me this link. RedState: How to destoy American Democracy (Or sour grapes)

Well, here goes.

The first thing we need to do is find a leading conservative professor to write a book called "What's the matter with Vermont?" and spend months touring the country verbally agonizing over why seemingly sensable rural/suburban white voters consistently vote for candidates pushing higher taxes on them, simply because they love social liberalism. Imply that these voters are stupid. Very stupid.

We then need to find most rabidly conservative ex-elected official possible and immediately install him or her as RNC Chairperson. I'm thinking Pat Buchanan, but since he flirted with the Reform Party awhile back, we'll go with Newt Gingrich. Newt will then embark with our OWN "50 state" strategy. This will consist of finding the most far-right candidates we can find to run in the red states, and then to run candidates who look like, act and sound just like centrists to run in blue states, and then have them vote exactly like Mitch McConnell when they arrive in the Senate or John Boehner in the House. If their consistuents get pissed at them back home for misleading them, just have them say "Hey, I'm just distancing myself from Obama."

Naturally, we'll have to change RedState from being a thoughtful site for conservative ideas, and change it into a dual purpose site. One part of it will be for hate-filled invective attacking anything President Obama says or does (bonus points for cussing, kiddos!), any Congresscritter of either party who supports him on ANY issue, and advocating the immediate primary challenging of ANY Congressional Republican which shows ANYTHING but blind opposition to any issue President-elect Obama supports, even if he were to sincerely reach out to conservatives and promise to form a "New Tone" of civility in Washington, DC. Oh, and naturally, we need to constantly drive home the point that Barack Obama is the worst President in American History.

We'll just explain it all away by saying "We need more and better Republicans."

The 2nd new purpose of RedState will be to become a virtual ATM machine for all Congressional candidates we support. We'll call it ActRed. Again, this will consist of the most far-right candidates we can find to run in safe Republican districts, as well as far-right candidates (who look and sound like centrists) to run in Democratic districts and states, including states and districts we have no chance in holy hell of winning. Hey, you never know.

From there, we need to pressure the mainstream media into running story after story about "What do Republicans need to do to get back in power?" Have this be a weekly angle. Kill ANY story out there that suggests this was anything other than a fluke defeat. Push ANY story we can find about how Obama's support is slowly slipping away and breaking apart. Highlight any story about Democratic discontent about Obama's lack of leadership.

Start chatter about how there's a new "secular right" movement growing in the Northeast, Northwest, and California. This (imaginary) movement consists of all non-blacks in these regions who voted for Obama having "buyer's remorse" and are now far more interested in voting Republican than ever before, and can look past the GOP's social conservatism. See if the mainsteam media will pick up on it.

While that story is going on, start chatter about how Hispanics are utterly shocked by how wild Barack Obama is going with the social liberalism. Mention that Hispanic Catholics, in particular, are dismayed by how President Obama is looking to push abortion rights, including partial-birth abortion rights, down the nation's throat. Get the Mainstream media to go out and find 1 Hispanic that feels that way and build an entire series of exposes on this.

R.I.P., G.O.P.

America’s thirty-year flirtation with conservatism is over.
I realize this sounds like a strong statement. That’s because it is – and as uber-right-winger Grover Norquist pointed out on Harvard’s WHRB-FM Tuesday night, obituaries for conservatism have been written after every election for decades. But I contend that Tuesday’s results, taken in historical context, are especially persuasive: American politics are realigning away from the freakish, unnatural, destructive paradigm of the Reagan-Clinton-Bush era and back into their usual, characteristically progressive mode. It’s a great time to be a young liberal.

Remember, conservatism as we understand it has been a brief and abnormal phenomenon. Prior to the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, there hadn’t been a single government that we could identify as “conservative” on today’s terms; just look at the prior 50 years.

FDR, Truman, Kennedy, LBJ, and Carter were all progressive Democrats to varying degrees, Eisenhower was a moderate who frequently repudiated the right wing, and Nixon (people forget this) ran a progressive administration that opened relations with Communist China, experimented with price controls in the domestic economy, founded the EPA and passed the Clean Air Act, and even made a push for universal health care.

None of this is out of the ordinary in an American context; what’s out of the ordinary is Reagan’s experiment and the years of conservative wingnuttery that followed it. This was the work of a few Wall Street cowboys, who effectively browbeat the Congress and media into supporting their radical deregulationism, and underwrote it by harnessing the untapped power of the religious right.

It appeared to be a successful experiment for a while — certainly its simplicity and lack of moral relativism made it well-suited for campaign commercials and TV commentary — but as the left knew all along and as has become clear to everyone during the Bush years, conservatism just does not work as a governing philosophy. It is an inherently stupid ideology founded on inherently bad ideas, and there is no reason to think it’s coming back anytime soon.

Now consider this week. On Tuesday Americans gave a strong mandate to Barack Obama and the Democratic Party, a party that, under the leadership of Howard Dean, has moved boldly to the left in its policies and tone. The themes Democrats sketched out in 2006 — universal health care, fair taxes, keeping big business in line, social progressivism and pluralism, and reality-based foreign policy — were affirmed in 2008. We have overwhelmingly elected an unabashedly liberal government.

But in historical context, the breaking of racial barriers aside, this isn’t a particularly big deal. Clear-eyed liberalism is just returning to its natural role as America’s governing consensus ideology, and it’s likely to remain there for some time to come. This sounds strange and implausible to us right now, but trust me, you’ll get used to it.
I’m especially confident of that because the Republican Party is in a shambles right now. After a universally loathed presidency and two consecutive humiliating defeats, the GOP has no credible public voice going forward. America’s thirty-year flirtation with conservatism is over.
