Human Testicles Yield Stem Cells
Scientists have derived potentially therapeutic stem cells from adult, human testicles—a development that may eventually make new medical treatments possible while avoiding moral dilemmas.
Stem cell generation for individual therapies could address a wide range of ailments, including Parkinson's disease, leukemia, and spinal cord injuries.
So far, the most versatile human stem cells have come from embryos—fertilized eggs—that critics say should not be used in scientific research because they are potential humans.
A major breakthrough was made in 2006, when several research teams harvested stem cells from the testicles of adult mice.
Duplicating the feat in humans had proved elusive prior to research published online this week in Nature.
Japanese researchers announced in August that they had isolated stem cells in adult, human teeth, but the team's work was not peer reviewed.
"As you might imagine, this is a pretty significant step forward," said Chad Cowan of Harvard University's Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology.
Cowan is unaffiliated with the research.
"It's very exciting that we may now have a non-ethically troubling source of pluripotent cells for humans—or at least males," he said.
The cells, which can be harvested from living men, may also remove some immunological obstacles.
"The exciting thing about this source of stem cells is that they are the patient's own and can be used to develop individual cell-based therapies that will not provoke any kind of immune reaction," Skutella said.
"That is one of the big drawbacks of embryonic stem cells: Quite aside from the grave ethical considerations, they remain a foreign body and will always create immunological problems."
Scientists hope that a similar cell source can be found in women. Scientists have derived potentially therapeutic stem cells from adult, human testicles—a development that may eventually make new medi... more -

Lakota Women’s Rights Activist Tillie Black Bear: Native Women must be respected e...
Native Women should be treated with respect even in thought.
That was the message from a Lakota activist for women and children's rights.
This is the second in a series of videos about Tillie Black Bear, executive director and one of the founders of the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society.
For 31 years, the WBCWS has served the Lakota Sioux Rosebud Reservation in Mission, SD.
Black Bear spoke to the Northern Michigan University 2008 Uniting Neighbors in the Experience of Diversity (UNITED) Conference on Sept. 23, 2008.
"When we look at who we are as woman. We really have to look at where we come from as woman. I always encourage women from other tribes to take a look at where they were before pre-European contact. What belonged to women. Tribal women had rights. We owned property. We had our children with us. Our children belonged to the women. With the impact of colonization, those rights were skewed. Because we had our white sisters coming from Europe who were the property of the men. And the children were the property of men, as well. So you had this group of people coming and interfacing with tribal women all across Turtle I sland. Whether it was the eastern coast or the western coast. And what they found there was (tribal) women who owned property ... For our white sisters, I work for equality for them."

Gender Bias in Family Court
Our legal pendulum swings to yet another extreme. Gender bias runs rampant in our family court system. In the 1960's women, fought hard to get laws passed to protect women against domestic violence. It took many painful years for our legal system to recognize women as victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence, stalking, and sexual harassment laws were passed and enforced to protect "true victims." Many women lived through domestic violence; many died. Some went to jail for homicide; some were later pardoned. We, as women, finally got society to recognize violence against women.
Shame on all those women of the 1990's who now use these laws to their advantage in family courts to bring men to their knees; and to erase fathers from the lives of their children! False allegations by women of child abuse, domestic violence, and stalking are almost never questioned by judges for fear of being politically incorrect. Testicles 'are stem cell source' Possible Breakthrough!
The cells in a man's testicles may be able to do a lot more than just make sperm - they could provide any cell type in his body.
German and UK research suggests that sperm cells can be coaxed into stem cells with similar properties to those found in the embryo.
The study, in Nature, raises hopes eventually of a supply of "repair tissue" for other parts of the body.
Any ability to transform cells taken from an adult back into stem cells, and then onwards into a wide variety of tissue types, offers the chance of "personalised treatment" for patients.
Resulting brain, bone, or heart cells could be injected with no fear of rejection by the body's immune system.
It would also avoid the ethical controversies surrounding the use of cells taken from embryos.
From these, they extracted a type of cell called the "sperm precursor cell" - a type of adult stem cells with a fixed role - to become a sperm cell.
These were then manipulated chemically in the laboratory into a state more similar to cells found in the embryo, which can go on to produce all the cell types in the body.
However, it is as yet unclear whether the cells could one day be safely used in humans. The cells in a man's testicles may be able to do a lot more than just make sperm - they could provide any cell type in his body. ... more -

Study: young men give nod to net over TV
Nearly 70% of men ages 18 to 34 would rather rather give up TV than the Internet, according to new research commissioned by Web content provider Break Media. And 26% would rather surf the Web than have sex.
Of course, they could be watching "videos featuring hot girls," the third-most-popular category for online entertainment behind funny videos and full-length movies.
Among other findings from the study conducted by brand and communications research firm Hall & Partners: Nearly half of men in that age group spend 22 hours a week online, and nearly half said they bought something at retail after viewing an online ad.
"The results speak to how far the Web has come as an entertainment and communications platform in a short period of time," said Keith Richman, CEO of Break Media, which runs male-oriented video site Break.com and other online properties.
The report is the latest in a series of efforts that Break has commissioned to help establish the efficacy of online video advertising. In April it formed the Online Video Advertising ROI Council with partners including Ogilvy One, AT&T and Horizon Media to provide a research and education forum for the emerging ad category.
Richman said the new study, based on a survey of 500 men who use the Internet at least once a month, was intended to provide greater insight on the target audience for many consumer brands. "We're trying to help advertisers and ourselves create a portrait of the audience we're reaching," he said.
That young men spend a lot of time on the Internet and funny videos are their favorite form of online entertainment shouldn't come as a big surprise to anyone. But Richman said the research highlights the imbalance between time spent online and the relatively small share of ad dollars the Web garners.
Emarketer estimates that the Internet will account for 8.7% of total U.S. ad spending this year compared to roughly 60% for TV. "It's still a pretty stark difference," Richman. Encouraging marketers to shift more dollars online were findings indicating men are receptive to online advertising. They often recall online ads after viewing them, and nearly 60% like or don't mind 5-second video pre-roll ads. (Only 31% feel the same about 30-second pre-rolls.) Male bosses act like monkeys to assert authority
In every work environment, bosses, like dominant animals, mark out their territory, assert their authority and display power, researchers concluded after interviewing hundreds of managers and employees.
Managers will also wear dark suits with bright shirts or ties in much the same way an animal flaunts their brightly coloured body parts. While in the wild it is to attract a mate, in the office, it is about asserting your place in the hierarchy.
Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite, who led the study, said: "From an evolutionary point of view, about 200 species are known to strut and puff out their chests. Homo sapiens evolved over two million years to be tribal and hierarchical, and it's really not much different from other species at the evolutionary, biological level. Perhaps it's imprinted on our genes."
The study, published in Australia's Journal of Health Organisation and Management, says managers will tend to have bigger chairs than everyone else, speak more loudly and interrupt more frequently. They also lace their speech with management jargon and acronyms, in order to confuse people. Professor Braithwaite added: "What we found was universal animalistic displays of power, masculinity, sexuality and authority that seem to be hard-wired in." In every work environment, bosses, like dominant animals, mark out their territory, assert their authority and display power, research... more
