Grey's Anatomy star donates $50,000 to support gay marriage
Grey’s Anatomy star T.R. Knight donated $50,000 to 'No on 8' to fight Proposition 8, which would outlaw same-sex marriage in the state.
The donation comes one day after Equality California called for an emergency LGBT media briefing and reported that contrary to published reports, Yes on 8 is ahead in the polls.
Knight’s donation comes after Ohio entrepreneur Jonathan Lewis issued a challenge of sorts to Los Angeles's entertainment industry -- raise $500,000 for No on Prop. 8, and he and his family will match the contributions dollar for dollar. Gay marriage opponents outraise supporters in California
A just-released poll conducted by Lake Research Partners shows the yes side leading by four percentage points. Currently, 47% of voters support the banning of gay marriage in California, while 43% would vote against a ban, according to the poll.
During an "Emergency LGBT Media Briefing," Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality California and a member of the No on 8 executive committee, stated: "We are going to lose this ... if we don’t raise the money we need to compete on the airwaves."
The poll showed a major shift from recent polling results that claimed opponents of the ban, Proposition 8, had a five-point advantage among voters. The reason for the shift, Kors explained, is simple: Yes on 8 is raising more money, and its most recent ad campaign has been highly effective.
Though Lake Research Partners' Celinda Lake said studies show the No on 8 ad campaign has proved to be effective with voters, Kors said the additional money raised by Yes on 8 has allowed ban supporters to get their message out to a wider audience.
On the conference call, Smith and Kors put it a little more plainly -- No on 8 needs to raise at least $10 million in the next 28 days. That money, they say, will be used to directly combat the Yes on 8 ad campaign's strategic advantages. Smith stressed that No on 8 is having great success reaching young voters through grassroots and Internet viral marketing campaigns, but that more money is needed to compete with television advertising. Google opposes same-sex marriage ban
Google has taken a stand against Proposition 8, an anti-gay marriage measure on the November ballot in California.
Google's co-founder Sergey Brin released a statement, saying that "while there are many objections to this proposition – further government encroachment on personal lives, ambiguously written text – it is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8. While we respect the strongly-held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 – we should not eliminate anyone's fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love. Because our company has a great diversity of people and opinions – Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, all religions and no religion, straight and gay – we do not generally take a position on issues outside of our field, especially not social issues." Proposition 8, a California constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage, has attracted an unlikely assortment of foes, including Vice President Cheney’s daughter Mary, Brad Pitt, and Steven Spielberg. Man faces excommunication for supporting gay marriage
Andrew Callahan is facing excommunication from the Mormon Church for speaking out against Proposition 8, the ballot measure to constitutionally ban gay marriage in California.
On Monday, Callahan received a letter from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that said, "You are reported to have participated in conduct unbecoming a member of the church and have been in apostasy." The LDS Church publicly backs the marriage ban and has reportedly given up to 40% of the money raised by the Yes on 8 campaign.
Callahan, who started the anti-Prop. 8 website Signing for Something, is unfazed: "I am a member of a church that is oppressing people and that just seems wrong to me and I am trying to stop them. I can't believe there is a God who is a bigot, and it just seems like the same sort of racial bigotry that the Mormon Church was known for in the '50s, '60s, and '70s."
Callahan, who is not gay, will appear before an LDS disciplinary hearing on Friday night. And while excommunication is likely, Callahan is undeterred. "We're just wrong and we need to change that, and I'm not going to stop when they excommunicate me and I am not going to apologize and beg them to keep me a member of the church," he said. Vicar blesses lesbian wedding despite church rules
The Rev Jim Cotter said the service celebrating the civil partnership of the two women was a "day of great delight and healing". However a complaint was made and he has now been reprimanded by the Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan.
It is the latest example of priests defying Anglican Communion guidelines over homosexuality - which state that practising homosexuals should not become clergy and same-sex unions cannot be blessed in church - in a row that has driven the 80 million-strong worldwide church to the brink of schism.
Earlier this summer a Church of England rector sparked controversy by carrying out a gay "wedding" for two priests in his historic London church, in a service that included the exchange of rings and traditional vows.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, warned liberals at the Lambeth Conference of "grave" consequences if they do not stop inflaming tensions by blessing same-sex unions and electing openly gay clergy, yet many have vowed to continue doing so.
Dr Morgan himself has said that he would be happy to ordain homosexual clergy, while there has been speculation that a priest who almost became England's first openly gay bishop in 2003, the Very Rev Jeffrey John, could be elected Bishop of Bangor next month.
In the latest example of a church blessing of a homosexual relationship, Mr Cotter blessed the civil partnership of two lesbians at St Hywyn's Church in Aberdaron, North Wales, on July 12.
He claimed there had been no local opposition and that three members of his local church council had attended the event, as well as a dozen friends of the couple, who live in Yorkshire but have a holiday home in Wales.
"There wasn't any fuss. It was a day of great delight and healing," said Mr Cotter.
He claimed he had been given approval by the local church council to carry out the ceremony but admitted the blessing of civil partnerships in church was a "grey area".
A complaint was later made about the service and the Archbishop of Wales wrote to Mr Cotter telling him he had exceeded his authority, since the church has "no liturgy" for same-sex unions.
The Church in Wales said in a statement: "The Church in Wales does not and has not authorised public services for the blessing of same-sex unions and therefore has no liturgy for such partnerships. The service which took place at St Hywyn's Aberdaron on July 12 should not have taken place and the Archbishop is dealing with the matter.
"The Church in Wales does, however, affirm the value of committed friendships between people of the same sex and clergy are encouraged to minister sensitively and pastorally to gay and lesbian people." The Rev Jim Cotter said the service celebrating the civil partnership of the two women was a "day of great delight and healing... more -

Ex-Mormon gives $1 million to support same-sex marriage
Ex-Mormon Bruce Bastian has donated $1 million to support California's fight against proposition 8, which seeks to ban same-sex marriage in the state.
Bastian gave $5,000 in May, but after the Latter-day Saints Church issued a formal statement expecting all California Mormons to “do all [they] can to support the proposed constitutional amendment,” which would define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, Bastian upped his donation significantly. "The LDS Church has no business stepping their big nose in something that's a legal matter, not a religious matter," Bastian stated. "Constitutions are meant to protect minorities -- not to take rights away from people."
Bastian, who attended Brigham Young University and went on to cocreate WordPerfect software, grew up in a conservative Mormon family in Twin Falls, Idaho. He has been at odds with the church's view on homosexuality since coming out as a gay man, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Utah Mormons have donated $120,550 to support Prop. 8, according to public finance records. Thirty-five percent of donors to ProtectMarriage.com are LDS, contributing close to $5 million collectively. “Many, if not most, Mormons have responded to the church leaders’ request for assistance on this matter by actively campaigning in support of Prop. 8,” the group says on its website. Brad Pitt donates $100,000 to support gay marriage
Brad Pitt announced that he is donating $100,000 to fight Proposition 8, the November ballot initiative that could ban same-sex marriage in California. Pitt's contribution is the largest anti-Prop. 8 donation donated by a celebrity.
"Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it; because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another; and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8," the actor said in a statement.
Political strategist Chad Griffin told the Times that he hopes Pitt's donation spurs more celebrity donors. Recent weeks have been marred by reports the Yes on 8 campaign has seen a huge influx of cash support from wealthy evangelical donors. Palin's Church believes in converting gays
"Gov. Sarah Palin's church is promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer.
"You'll be encouraged by the power of God's love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality," according to the insert in the bulletin of the Wasilla Bible Church, where Palin has prayed for about six years.
Palin's conservative Christian views have energized that part of the GOP electorate, which was lukewarm to John McCain's candidacy before he named her as his vice presidential choice. She is staunchly anti-abortion, opposing exceptions for rape and incest, and opposes gay marriage and spousal rights for gay couples.
Focus on the Family, a national Christian fundamentalist organization, is conducting the "Love Won Out" Conference in Anchorage, about 30 miles from Wasilla.
Palin, campaigning with McCain in the Midwest on Friday, has not publicly expressed a view on the so-called "pray away the gay" movement. Larry Kroon, senior pastor at Palin's church, was not available to discuss the matter Friday, said a church worker who declined to give her name.
Gay activists in Alaska said Palin has not worked actively against their interests, but early in her administration she supported a bill to overrule a court decision to block state benefits for gay partners of public employees. At the time, less than one-half of 1 percent of state employees had applied for the benefits, which were ordered by a 2005 ruling by the Alaska Supreme Court.
Palin reversed her position and vetoed the bill after the state attorney general said it was unconstitutional. But her reluctant support didn't win fans among Alaska's gay population, said Scott Turner, a gay activist in Anchorage.
"Less than 1 percent of state employees would even apply for benefits, so why make a big deal out of such a small number?" he said.
"I think gay Republicans are going to run away" if Palin supports efforts like the prayers to convert gays, said Wayne Besen, founder of the New York-based Truth Wins Out, a gay rights advocacy group. Besen called on Palin to publicly express her views now that she's a vice presidential nominee.
"People are looking at Sarah Palin as someone who might feasibly be in the White House," he said."
