Same sex marriage pioneer dies
Del Martin, a pioneering lesbian rights activist who married her lifelong partner on the first day same-sex couples could legally wed in California, has died. She was 87.
This is so sad. A couple for 55 years, these incredible women were pioneers of same-sex marriage in California.
Martin and Lyon, who in 1955 co-founded the nation's first outspoken advocacy group for lesbians, the Daughters of Bilitis, were married at San Francisco City Hall on June 16, 2008. Sunday Streets in SF!
The city will open up a stretch of roadway connecting the Bayview district to Chinatown and running along the city’s waterfront. This route will be available for physical activities from 9AM to 1PM on Sunday, Aug 31, 2008 and again on Sunday Sept. 14, 2008.
So who will benefit?
Sunday Streets offers free and fun physical activity space to all San Franciscans and provides open space in neighborhoods that lack such space currently. Local businesses will also benefit from increased pedestrian and bicycle traffic along commercial corridors. The events provide a model of how cities can provide healthy, environmental friendly outdoor activities for their residents.

San Francisco's sanctuary city status changed by Newsom
San Francisco declared itself a Sanctuary City in 1989. This means it doesn't hand over undocumented immigrants to the federal authorities.
Recently the city policy has come under fire when it was revealed that city officials escorted two juveniles with drug charges back to their native Honduras using tax payers' dollars.
Officials on each side of the issue bring up good points about first time offenders vs clear exploitation of San Francisco's sanctuary status.
Mayor Newsom now says that he will direct all felony cases to the Feds.
Could this have anything to do with Newsom's possible run for Govenor? San Francisco declared itself a Sanctuary City in 1989. This means it doesn't hand over undocumented immigrants to the federal a... more -
NRA sues San Francisco
A day after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Americans have a constitutional right to possess guns for self-defense, the National Rifle Association sued San Francisco and its Housing Authority for banning firearms in the authority's public housing.
The NRA filed in federal court Friday on behalf of an unidentified gay man living in Valencia Gardens Housing in the Mission District, who said he keeps a gun in his home for protection against hate crimes even though his Housing Authority lease forbids possession of guns and other weapons.
The suit said the Housing Authority policy was based on a 2007 San Francisco ordinance prohibiting guns on city property. The ordinance applies only to city-owned property such as parks and playgrounds and not to the independently managed, federally funded Housing Authority. But the authority's interim director, Mirian Saez, said the ban on guns is consistent with city policy and is similar to rules in most such agencies around the nation. A day after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Americans have a constitutional right to possess guns for self-defense, the National Rif... more -

Speaking of Gay Marriage
For California, gay rights have been in a fickle state ever since San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom opened the cities City Hall doors and offered gay couples a place to legally wed. Approximately 4,000 people took advantage of the Mayors offer before the Supreme Court deemed same sex marriages as illegal. This prompted 24 gay couples to sue the state of California with the support of the city of San Francisco and gay rights organizations. Their diligence seems to have paid off but will this ruling be overturned again? For California, gay rights have been in a fickle state ever since San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom opened the cities City Hall doors a... more

The carefully orchestrated re-routing of the Olympic torch
"Mayor Gavin Newsom told The Associated Press that the well choreographed fake-out was prompted by the size and behavior of the crowds amassing outside AT&T Park, site of the relay's opening ceremony."
I, for one, was disappointed I didn't get to see the torch run. It was a historic moment in Olympic and San Francisco history that I really wanted to see first hand and I felt a bit robbed. Speaking to a colleague, he affirmed that it was the smartest choice considering all the ruckus that was happening right outside our workplace. Although we were all there in droves with cameras ready to capture the hoopla, it was disheartening that we had to watch it on CNN instead.
I would've loved to watch all the kung-fu. I wonder what would've happened...

Olympic Torch Plays Hide & Seek in San Francisco
After huge crowds gathered along the planned route, it was changed kilometers away bringing both the protesters and supporters together in anger over such a change. San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom did say that the route was expected to make a few changes even up to the last minute. The closing ceremony was canceled as the torch was sent to the airport for an alternate ceremony there.
This may not have been the disaster that Paris and London had seen, but it was a disaster nonetheless. After huge crowds gathered along the planned route, it was changed kilometers away bringing both the protesters and supporters togethe... more -
California Supreme Court hears gay marriage case March 4
The California Supreme Court will hear a historic case that will decide the fate of millions of gay and lesbian California residents. In 2004, San Fransisco Mayer Gavin Newsom started issuing same sex marriage licenses as a challenge to state law. The marriages have since been dissolved by the state. Some couples sued and that brings us to March 4. The court has 90 days to make a ruling following the hearing. If they rule in favor of equal rights, California could be the second state, after Massachusetts, to allow marriage equality. "The California legislature twice passed legislation that would permit same-sex couples to marry but both times Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the bills." The California Supreme Court will hear a historic case that will decide the fate of millions of gay and lesbian California residents. ... more
