    • Mind controlled bionic limbs

In the George Lucas classic Star Wars, hero Luke Skywalker's arm is severed and amputated during a lightsaber fight and consequently fitted with a bionic arm that he can use as if it were his own limb. At the time the script was written, such a remedy was pure science fiction; however, the ability to manufacture bionic arms that have the functionality and even feel of a natural limb is becoming very real,The time has come for implementing this technology on paralyzed human patients and amputees....
Keeping it short- BMI stands for Brain Machine Interface!

A longer read through the article will explain more, but this is super cool amazing groundbreaking stuff!!!

    • Three-legged best friend test next-generation prosthetic

Engineers and veterinarians at NC State University have developed a new type of prosthetic that becomes a permanent part of the limb, allowing the bone to be load bearing and much stronger and less infection-prone than traditional prosthetics. The new osseointegrated prosthetic could improve the lives of people who have lost limbs to injury. Cassidy, a rescued german shepherd mix, is the first large animal to receive this new prosthetic. If all goes well, the first human may receive a new leg or arm in just a few years. • Tough luck: man loses leg twice

An upstate New York man says he's still upbeat despite losing the same leg twice.

Scott Listemann told the Poughkeepsie Journal that he laughs about losing his foot and lower leg "both the first time and the second time." The Poughkeepsie man lost his leg below the knee in a November, 2007 accident. Listemann, 47, lost his prosthetic leg last month while skydiving in upstate New York.

The lower leg below the knee, with a foot clad in a running shoe, flew off after he jumped from the plane but before the parachute opened. Listemann says he's sure "it will show up eventually."

Listemann has distributed flyers throughout upstate Gardiner and hopes someone will find his prosthetic leg and call him.

    • Kitty gets new leg/new lease on life

Thanks to NC State University engineers and veterinarians, animals with missing limbs can get the latest in prosthetics--custom osseointegrated prosthetics that actually become part of the animal's native bone. The research may one day help soldiers and others with severe limb injury or amputations to have a more comfortable and stronger prosthetic limb replacement. • Disabled athlete granted access to compete in Beijing

Get excited for this summer's sports hero. Well, he has to qualify, first...

Oscar Pistorius will try out for this summer's Olympic Games. His carbon fiber prosthetics are code-named "Cheetahs".

With this movement by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, disabled athletes will be able to compete with able-bodied athlete unless the the International Association of Athletics Federation can "provide indubitable scientific evidence to the contrary", reports The New York Times today.

      -Jake
      ---------------------
      FROM ARTICLE:

Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee sprinter who was barred from able-bodied competition in January, will be allowed to pursue his dream of qualifying for the Olympic Games after an unexpected decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Court, an international panel which has final say over legal matters in sport, overturned the International Association of Athletics Federations’ ban, ruling in effect that Pistorius’ carbon fiber prosthetic blades do not give him an unfair advantage.

The court came to a decision after hearing expert testimony from Pistorius’s camp and the I.A.A.F., track and field’s governing body, on April 29 and 30 in Lausanne, Switzerland. It published its opinion in a statement at 9 a.m., Eastern time. The I.A.A.F. had declared Pistorius ineligible for able-bodied competition in January despite originally clearing him to compete last spring, pending further investigation. Pistorius will be allowed to resume his efforts immediately.

      *clip*

What the decision means for other disabled athletes hoping to compete in the Olympics is that they will be allowed to compete with able-bodied athletes unless the I.A.A.F. can provide indubitable scientific evidence to the contrary. In the past, I.A.A.F. spokesman Nick Davies has insisted that these matters can only be treated on a case by case basis with the burden of proof on the athletes to show that the prosthetics do not provide an unfair advantage.

“Unless there is adequate evidence to support that determination,” Kessler said. “Then the disabled should be allowed to compete.”

    • Marine Uses Special Prosthetic Leg to Scuba Dive

A 22-year-old Marine, who lost his leg after combat injury in Iraq, used a special prosthesis Monday to scuba dive in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

Jeremy Stengel of Waterford, Wisc., is part of a group of 14 soldiers with war-related injuries participating in Warrior Dive through Tuesday. The event is organized by the International Association for Handicapped Divers in conjunction with a Key Largo dive shop and other area businesses.

Stengel said the water leg prosthesis is more waterproof than the one he uses on land and features an artificial foot that can be extended so a dive fin can be used as normal.

"This was my first day really diving, seeing all the sea life." said Stengel. "It was amazing."

Stengel lost his leg in February 2007 while on a sweep for improvised explosive devices.

Inspired by the robotic masterpieces in the Star Wars films, a group of mechanical engineers have been developing a prosthetic arm that they hope can improve the life of many amputees. With excessive processing power, sensory feedback, and a sensitive touch, these arms could well revolutionise the way amputees are treated. • Man's Best Friend Gets His Balls Back

Dog owners may have hit an all-time high on the ridiculous scale with the newest trend in pet spoiling. Introducing the Neuticle. The what? The Neuticle: a prosthetic testicle for your castrated pooch. It really is the dog's bollocks.

The poor little doggy gets his peanuts removed and then feels less manly (or might not even notice, to be honest). But not to worry! Now his owners can take him in for an operation to have some falsies implanted in his scrotum, taking him back to his former 'anatomically correct' self. Do they even do this for people? What is this world coming to??
