    • CURRENT LOGO TRENDS

      By Bill Gardner

Trend-watching, until recently, has largely been an exercise in watching connections form between direct associations. Photoshop releases a new filter, and voila - entire raft of logos take on that effect. A particular illustration style is featured in a successful advertising campaign or movie, and in what seems like minutes, the flavor of that art starts to enhance corporate identities.

Periodically, something truly surprising and unexpected pops up. Finding those little treasures are one of the great perks of categorizing 27,000 logos, as LogoLounge and a talented panel of judges just did in preparation for our fourth book. But there's always that natural undercurrent of influence that touches this design and that, a drift of scent, a faint change in air temperature. It's there, but almost not.

This year, however, it seems as though there has been a change in the nature of trends themselves. Instead of a hub-to-spoke relationship in which trends fan out from a central source, prevailing tendencies in logo design now seem to send out long underground runners that poke through the dirt in unrelated, unexpected places, anywhere in the world. It's harder and harder to trace the rhizomatous spread of ideas anymore - which truly is a good thing.

    • Help Me Choose A New Logo (or not!)

Not sure if I should even change it, but if I do, I’ve created two modifications of the original that I’m debating between.

Give me your feedback on either Version A or Version B by leaving a comment for A or B (or let me know if I just need to keep the current logo):

    • What pops into your mind when you see a logo?

"If brands exist as the sum of all thoughts in someone's head, then if you ask a bunch of people what a brand is and make a tag cloud, you should have a pretty accurate look at what the brand represents".

This is how new-media and marketing strategist Noah Brier came up with a website that allows users to tag popular brands. This incredible experiment has already collected more than 600,000 tags in less than two weeks. By typing the first word or phrase that springs to mind when watching a logo, users create a tag cloud for each company.

The results are pretty amazing expecially for controversial companies. McDonald's brand image, for instance, is perceived as a curious oxymoron: "death" and "delicious".

    • World’s Largest Self-portrait

Using a briefcase loaded with a GPS gadget and the package-carrier DHL, artist Erik Nordenankar has created a continent-spanning drawing of himself. I was wondering how he had so much footage of the inside of shipping facilities and planes (and why those planes would fly such scribbly routes,) but it turns out that the whole thing is an advertising stunt commissioned by DHL. Yay for artvertising. Using a briefcase loaded with a GPS gadget and the package-carrier DHL, artist Erik Nordenankar has created a continent-spanning drawi... more

    • Starbucks logo under fire: shows partially covered breasts

The new retro logo at Starbucks is stirring controversy. The logo shows a mermaid with partially-covered breasts.

A Christian group based in San Diego called The Resistance says the logo looks like a naked woman with her legs spread like a prostitute.

The Resistance is calling for a national boycott of Starbucks.

Starbucks says the logo is appropriate. It'll be around for a few weeks.

The logo is based on a 16th century Norse woodcut of a two-tailed mermaid.

    • Apple tells The Big Apple to 'drop dead'

The Big Apple has a new logo, and Apple says: Drop dead.

At issue is the emblem for New York City's GreeNYC campaign, which has started to appear around the city on bus shelters, hybrid gasoline-electric taxicabs and even Whole Foods shopping bags.

"The city believes that Apple's claims have no merit and that no consumer is likely to be confused," says Gerald Singleton, the intellectual-property lawyer representing the Big Apple. "This well-known city is using its new design in a variety of contexts that have absolutely nothing to do with Apple Inc."

    • Car logos have come a long, long way

We've seen how cars have developed over the years, but although their logos haven't got any faster, some of them have got a hell of a lot sexier.

Who'd have thought it? Car logos even got sex appeal now... Well the Aston Martin one does, but that's because I know what the cars look like...

Is there any form of branding now that hasn't got even a hint of sex appeal in it?

We look at it nearly everyday of our lives, it's one of the most recognisable logos in the World, yet I've never known where it came from or who designed it.

Well, Ruth Kedar is the designer and in the article gives a quick look at the decisions that were taken in designing what could be one of the World's most-viewed logos ever.

So, next time you're about to hit up a search, know that that 'Google' logo ain't just letters!

    • Interesting Treaty on Logo Design

Paul from 321goflight posts a nice summary and op ed on the UPS logo redesign from a few years back. His conclusion:

Gradients, lens flares, faux-3D elements, and overused fonts can, as a result of their relative overabundance in our design ecosystem, officially be classified as noise. This means that about 90% of the new UPS logo is ?wasted space.? Whereas, with the Rand logo (and in this way, like much of his identity work), it?s all signal, baby.

    • The Osama Bin Laden Kebab stand

I took this picture down stairs of my house in Wuhan China, where I have been living for the last two years teaching English. The picture shows a kebab stand with a sign that has Osama Bin Laden on it and it reads "Arabic Barbecue."

I asked the owner why he used his picture and he said because Bin Laden is a famous Arab and because in the picture Bin Laden is gesturing a one and each kebab stick that he sells is one Chinese Yuan.

I thought this was interesting because it, in an extreme way, symbolized how closed off, and perhaps oblivious, Chinese society still is from the outside world.
