Radio talkers accuse Magic Johnson of faking AIDS
MINNEAPOLIS - Magic Johnson says he's outraged that a pair of Minneapolis talk radio hosts accused him of faking AIDS.
KTLK's Chris Baker and Langdon Perry made the remarks during Baker's conservative talk show on Wednesday.
The context for the remarks wasn't clear. According to a partial transcript and audio clip posted on a media watchdog site, mediamatters.org, the remarks came after a caller complained about demands on workers. Perry responded by asking about treatable diseases that a person can live with for a long time "if you just get some basic drugs." Hollywood is going trick-or-treating again.
Costume suppliers predict the top Halloween costumes this year will come from summer blockbusters and cable TV's Disney Channel.
Thanks to "The Dark Knight,'' Batman is a top costume for children, adults and pets, according to the National Retail Federation, while iParty's list of children's favorites adds the Joker, "Star Wars,'' Harry Potter and Hannah Montana.
Popular adult costumes are a pirate and a French maid, a variation on the revealing costumes popular for women. Politics is another popular theme, and you can expect a lot of Sarah Palins at Halloween parties later this month.
"Ghosts, mummies, witches always sell, and sometimes they sell extremely well,'' says Sal Perisano, CEO of iParty, a Web site that specializes in costumes and decorations. "However, pop culture in recent years has pretty much dictated what drives the bestsellers.'' ReprintPrint Email Font Resize The tops in Halloween costumes By Megan K. Scott Mercury News ... more -

McCain supporters show their true, racist, bigotted colors!!!
The anger is getting raw at Republican rallies and John McCain is acting to tamp it down.
McCain was booed by his own supporters Friday when, in an abrupt switch from raising questions about Barack Obama's character, he described the Democrat as a "decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."
...Shouts of "traitor," "terrorist," "treason," "liar," and even "off with his head" have rung from the crowd at McCain and Sarah Palin rallies, and gone unchallenged by them...
...Another said Obama would lead the U.S. into socialism...
...Another said he did not want his unborn child raised in a country led by Obama...
...I don't trust Obama," a woman said. "I have read about him. He's an Arab."
...someone in Palin's crowd in Clearwater, Fla., shouted "kill him," on Monday, meaning Obama...

Police Identify Girls Found in Freezer
Montgomery County Police say they have tentatively identified the two bodies found in Renee Bowman's freezer as two of Bowman's adopted daughters. They also released this undated photo of Jasmine Nicole Bowman, who would now be 9, and Minnet Cecila Bowman, who would be 11. A family friend made the identification, though as the Post points out, it's not yet an official identification. Still, police don't expect to discover the bodies belonged to anyone else once the autopsies are completed. Threats Cause Storeowner to Move Artwork Satirizing Palin
Washington, D.C. may run decidedly blue in elections, and you may have to walk past 25 blocks of Obama canvassers before you even spot a McCain sticker here these days, but that doesn't mean we're all in agreement in this city.
Home furnishing and design store Skynear, located in Adams Morgan, recently asked artist Dana Ellyn if they could hang a few of her paintings. Ellyn is a popular local artist, having shown her work in a number of venues, such as Warehouse, Gallery Neptune, Long View, and most recently in the Brushfire sponsored show at Gallery Plan B, from which the three pieces in question came. Her bold colored caricatures, which often focus on current events, are intentionally provocative. And this time, it seems, they're making some people downright violent. Palin's roots include FDR, Princess Diana
WASHINGTON (AP) — Barack Obama and Dick Cheney are not the only political odd couple who share a family tree. Sarah Palin is linked in her lineage to Franklin Roosevelt. She also has a connection with Princess Diana.
Roosevelt, the Depression-era Democratic president, is a distant cousin of Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, according to genealogists at Ancestry.com.
Roosevelt is Palin's ninth cousin once removed. Their common ancestor is Rev. John Lothrop, who came to Massachusetts in 1634.
Palin also has ties to the late British princess, the Web site's researchers found. The Alaska governor is a 10th cousin of the former royal.
Last year, Cheney's wife, Lynne, discovered the ancestral ties between the Republican vice president and Democratic presidential nominee while researching her book. She said the relationship was eighth cousin, though the Chicago Sun-Times has traced it as ninth cousins once removed. Postage problems snag absentee ballots for Nov. 4 election
Calvin Justice has a piece of advice for voters mailing in their ballots for the Nov. 4 election.
“You better put more than one stamp on it,” the Highland Village man said Thursday.
That’s despite assurances from the U.S. Postal Service that absentee ballots, which are larger in size than standard envelopes, only take one stamp. And despite area postal carriers being instructed to deliver absentee ballots regardless of how much postage is on the envelope.
Mr. Justice said his wife, Jean, attempted to mail off her ballot last week with a first-class stamp. Days later, the oversized envelope came back requesting an additional 20 cents. Mr. Justice said they added a 20-cent stamp and mailed it again. Calvin Justice has a piece of advice for voters mailing in their ballots for the Nov. 4 election. ... more -

Panic attacks: Voters unload at GOP rallies
The unmistakable momentum behind Barack Obama's campaign, combined with worry that John McCain is not doing enough to stop it, is ratcheting up fears and frustrations among conservatives.
And nowhere is this emotion on plainer display than at Republican rallies, where voters this week have shouted out insults at the mention of Obama, pleaded with McCain to get more aggressive with the Democrat and generally demonstrated the sort of visceral anger and unease that reflects a party on the precipice of panic.
The calendar is closing and the polls, at least right now, are not.
With McCain passing up the opportunity to level any tough personal shots in his first two debates and the very real prospect of an Obama presidency setting in, the sort of hard-core partisan activists who turn out for campaign events are venting in unusually personal terms. Deconstructing voters
With a black man running for president and a woman running for vice president, a panel discussion yesterday, titled "Framing Social Justice for the Election Year: Race, Gender, Ethnicity, and Politics," attempted to analyze the effects of gender and race identities in politics.
Panelists Mark Lopez, associate director of the Pew Hispanic Center; Melvin Foote, founder and president of the Constituency for Africa, an organization dedicated to American policy in Africa and Wendy Smooth, a women's studies assistant professor at Ohio State University, discussed the extent to which an individual's gender or race affects his or her political views. About 40 students and faculty attended the discussion, which was moderated by government and politics professor Ronald Walters, and most said they found it enlightening. Hispanics turn cold shoulder to McCain
Despite championing immigration reform in 2007, John McCain is poised to lose the Hispanic vote by a landslide margin that is well below President George W. Bush's 2004 performance.
Polls show Obama winning the broadest support from Latino voters of any Democrat in a decade, while McCain is struggling to reach 30 percent, closer to Senator Bob Dole's dismal 1996 result than to Bush's historic 40% four years ago.
McCain seems to have wound up with the worst of both worlds: He appears to be getting no credit from Latino voters for his past support for immigration reform, while carrying the baggage of other Republicans' hostility to illegal immigration. Despite championing immigration reform in 2007, John McCain is poised to lose the Hispanic vote by a landslide margin that is well bel... more -
Hilton continues online presidential campaign
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Watch out, world: Paris Hilton is continuing her bid for the White House.
The paparazzi darling and reality TV star touted her candidacy in a video on FunnyOrDie.com Wednesday — her second appearance in a political spoof on the site.
"Running for fake president is a little daunting," a heavily made-up Hilton tells Martin Sheen, whom she calls "one of our greatest fake presidents."
"Being a fake president is a lot harder today than it was when I was a fake president," says Sheen, who has often played American presidents, most notably on TV's "The West Wing."
