Marine dead zones set to expand rapidly

Rising levels of carbon dioxide could increase the volume of oxygen-depleted 'dead zones' in tropical oceans by as much as 50% before the end of the century — with dire consequences for the health of ecosystems in some of the world's most productive fishing grounds.

At depths between several tens and hundreds of metres, large parts of the tropical oceans are poorly supplied with dissolved oxygen, and are therefore hostile to most marine life. Scientists suspect that these zones are sensitive to climate change, but previous studies have arrived at conflicting conclusions regarding exactly how and why a more CO2-rich world affects oceanic oxygen content.

A team led by Andreas Oschlies of the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in Kiel, Germany, has now used a global model of climate, ocean circulation and biogeochemical cycling to extrapolate existing experimental results of the effects of altered carbon and nutrient chemistry on dissolved oxygen to the global ocean1. They found that a CO2-rich world will only have a small impact on waters at middle and high latitudes. But in all tropical oceans the volume of 'oxygen-minimum' zones will substantially increase as ocean bacteria feed on the algae that will flourish as a result of the elevated CO2 levels.

Sporadic measurements in the tropical Atlantic and Pacific suggest oxygen-depleted zones have been slowly expanding over the past 50 years2. But none of the previously assumed physical causes, such as ocean warming and reduced circulation, completely accounts for the effect. This prompted Oschlies and his colleagues to examine how the ocean's biology would be affected by rising CO2 levels. Their results are published in the journal Global Biogeochemical Cycles.

"Nobody really has ever modelled the feedback of rising CO2 on oceanic oxygen concentrations in such a credible way," says Gian-Kaspar Plattner, a carbon-cycle modeller at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich (ETH). "A 50% volume increase of oxygen-poor zones is much more than I would have expected. But further studies, with different climate parameters, are needed to add robustness to these results and reduce uncertainty."

Meanwhile, researchers aboard two German research vessels, the Meteor and the Maria S. Merian, are investigating the matter further. In the waters off western Africa and Peru, which are rich in marine life, teams from the University of Kiel and the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences, also in Kiel, will study the physical and biological processes that are thought to drive oxygen loss in tropical oceans.

The coastal economies in these regions rely heavily on fishing. For now, says Oschlies, local fisheries may not feel any downturn because fish stocks can probably evade the dead zones by moving further up in the water column. But if oxygen and nutrient levels continue to drop, that could hit the region hard within a few decades.

Oceanic oxygen levels have varied considerably throughout Earth's past. Five nations under threat from climate change

While the world dithers about tackling climate change, in some parts of the world people are running out of time. In Florida sea level rises can be worked around to some extent - condos can be put on stilts and moved away from the shoreline. But on some islands you can only move back so far before you have to start worrying about the water at your back door as well as the water in front.

Here are five islands whose inhabitants are going to need a new home soon:

1. The Guardian reports today that the new president of the Maldives will be putting part of the country's profits from tourism into a very special - and unusual - fund: one that will be used to buy a new, climate-change-friendly home. With its highest point reaching only 2.4 metres, the Maldives is one of the lowest-lying nations in the world and risks being submerged by rising sea-levels.

2. Tuvalu is another small pacific island state, and after the Maldives the second-lowest nation in the world. At its highest, it is 5 metres above sea-level and could be gone by the middle of this century. In 2002, the government was said to have hired two international law firms to look into suing polluting nations for effectively evicting its citizens.

3. Kiribati is a group of 32 atols and one island that peaks at 6.5 metres above sea-level. The World Bank has been involved in assessing the nation's vulnerability to climate change. I attended a talk by one of the project leaders some years ago in Paris. She quoted a few of the changes which the islanders were noticing. The one that has always stuck with me was "the first line of coconut trees has disappeared". Salt-intrusion was killing off the trees that were closest to the water.

4. The inhabitants of the Carteret Islands of Papua New Guinea may be among the first climate refugees - their home lies just 1.2 metres above the waves. The government of Papua New Guinea adopted a plan in 2005 to evacuate the locals to the neighbouring island of Bougainville. The relocation was initially scheduled for 2007, then delayed. According to this report, there was a trial earlier this year, which created some tension as relocated citizens were used as labourers in coconut plantations on Bougainville.

5. In 1995, 500,000 inhabitants on Bangladesh's Bhola Island were forced to move in when half their island was permanently flooded. Some claim they were the first climate refugees. Scientists predict that 20 million Bangladeshis could suffer the same fate by 2030.

How many more will it take for urgent action to begin? The longer we wait the more CO2 and other greenhouse gases continue to be spewed into the atmosphere. I recall sitting here last year asking the same question, and still no global treaty on climate change that addresses the true urgency of this, nor any significant bills by this Congress. Detto e fatto. La società giapponese Genepax ha depositato la domanda per ottenere il brevetto di un motore elettrico alimentato ad acqua. Qualsiasi tipo di acqua: dolce, salata o piovana. Se una inovazione del genere diventasse una realtà produttiva e di consumo sarebbe una vera rivoluzione. E in tempi di prezzi alle stelle per il petrolio una notizia come questa, naturalmente, ha una risonanza mondiale. Anche se dall'ideazione alla sua traduzione industriale il cammino è ancora lungo.

UN LITRO - Kiyoshi Hirasawa, amministratore delegato della Genepax, in un'intervista a una tv locale giapponese ha detto che il motore, con un solo litro di acqua, sarebbe in grado di far viaggiare un'auto per circa un'ora alla velocità di 80 km all'ora. «Non c'è bisogno di costruire un'infrastruttura per ricaricare le batterie, come avviene di solito per la maggior parte delle auto elettriche», ha aggiunto Hirasawa. Il motore funziona grazie a un generatore che la scompone l'acqua e la utilizza per creare energia elettrica. Hirasawa ha ammesso però che l'applicazione pratica non è nel futuro immediato e spera che il brevetto sia di interesse delle grandi case automobilistiche giapponesi. Serve ancora una fase di sviluppo e bisogna sperare che almeno uno dei grandi produttori creda in questa prospettiva. Anche perché al momento i progetti fanno in direzione opposta: motori a cellule di idrogeno che producono acqua nel processo, e non che la consumano. Lì i produttori hanno investito ingenti capitali. Avranno il coraggio di puntare e scommettere su un motore che utilizza il carburante più diffuso sul pianeta?

GREENPEACE DIFENDE LE POPOLAZIONI DAL CARBONE: ALCUNI ATTIVISTI SONO ENTRATI ALL'INTERNO DELLA CENTRALE ENEL DI CIVITAVECCHIA

È partita alle prime luci dell'alba la doppia azione di Greenpeace presso la centrale Enel di Civitavecchia. Gli attivisti sono entrati nella centrale e - a oltre cento metri di altezza - hanno aperto due enormi striscioni con il messaggio "Il governo contro Kyoto" e "mai più carbone". In contemporanea dalla nave di Greenpeace, "Arctic Sunrise", sono scesi i gommoni con un altro gruppo di attivisti che hanno scritto sul molo "Quit coal", no carbone.

L'azione di oggi vuole denunciare l'ostilità del Governo italiano al "pacchetto clima ed energia" dell'Unione europea. Il timore è che dietro la richiesta di 'maggiore flessibilità', il Governo intenda compromettere l'accordo e quindi sabotare il percorso per la seconda fase per Protocollo di Kyoto.

Con questa protesta Greenpeace chiede al Governo un 'Piano Marshall' per efficienza e sviluppo delle fonti rinnovabili: l'unica alternativa possibile per centrare gli obiettivi europei. Questi obiettivi sono un'occasione importante per il nostro Paese: la maggior parte dell'obiettivo del 20 per cento di efficienza in più negli usi elettrici è concentrato nell'industria e nel terziario, i settori che generano ricchezza.

Rinnovabili ed efficienza energetica sono la soluzione vera per l'Italia. Non certo un ritorno al nucleare, fonte rischiosa e costosa, promossa per favorire alcune lobby e non certo l'ambiente.

La recente conversione a carbone della centrale di Civitavecchia rappresenta il fallimento della politica energetica italiana verso la riduzione delle emissioni di gas serra. Una volta in funzione, la centrale di Civitavecchia immetterà in atmosfera oltre 10 milioni di tonnellate di CO2, pari alle emissioni di 2 milioni di SUV, ognuno dei quali percorre 25mila km in un anno.

Tutto ciò va ad aggiungersi al ritardo che l'Italia ha già contratto per Kyoto: 50 milioni di tonnellate l'anno. Per questo Greenpeace ha lanciato una cyberazione per chiedere al governo una moratoria sulle centrali a carbone e una rivoluzione energetica pulita.

Questo autunno le navi di Greenpeace 'Rainbow Warrior' e 'Arctic Sunrise' stanno solcando le acque del Mediterraneo - da Israele fino in Polonia - per diffondere il messaggio 'QUIT COAL' (NO CARBONE) in tutta Europa, in vista della Conferenza sui Cambiamenti Climatici delle nazioni Unite che si terrà a Poznan in Polonia il prossimo dicembre.

Berlusconi: guai a chi tocca la CO2

«Silvio Berlusconi da quando è tornato alla guida del Paese sta irrimediabilmente soffrendo di solitudine e adesso che Gorge W. Bush si appresta a lasciare la Casa Bianca e perfino Sarkozy si sente in dovere di voltargli le spalle soffre ancora di più.
Il Cavaliere è il solo leader europeo a non avere letto le conclusioni del rapporto Stern, redatto non da fanatici ambientalisti bensì da economisti, che hanno messo in luce la necessità di produrre grandi sforzi economici nell’immediato per ridurre gli effetti dei mutamenti climatici, dal momento che quegli stessi mutamenti, se non contrastati, determineranno costi economici enormemente più alti di quelli che sarebbero necessari per limitarne la portata. E’ rimasto il solo leader europeo ad investire svariati miliardi di euro per la costruzione di forni inceneritori, mentre gli altri Paesi li stanno smantellando. E’ rimasto il solo leader europeo a caldeggiare la costruzione di nuove centrali nucleari, mentre la maggioranza degli altri grandi Paesi in Europa (tranne la Francia che non potrebbe farlo) sono pronti a smantellare le proprie centrali nucleari nei prossimi anni. E’ rimasto il solo leader europeo a non avere capito che quello ambientale è un problema serissimo, forse perché nella sua testa continua ad albergare il pensiero che difendere l’integrità dell’ambiente sia un esercizio riprovevole appannaggio di fissati perditempo magari pure un po’ comunisti.

Proprio per queste ragioni non stupisce più di tanto il fatto che Silvio Berlusconi, ponendosi in netto contrasto con il Presidente francese Sarkozy, abbia deciso di mettere il veto al pacchetto UE sul clima concernente la riduzione dei gas serra entro il 2020 che chiede all’Italia di tagliare le emissioni di Co2 nei settori non inclusi nel sistema di scambio di emissioni (rifiuti, trasporti, edilizia) del 13% rispetto ai livelli del 2005. Veto che secondo il Cavaliere sarebbe indispensabile dal momento che le misure da adottare risulterebbero troppo onerose per l’economia italiana, in particolare per il settore automobilistico e per le piccole e medie imprese, soprattutto alla luce della recente crisi finanziaria.
Confindustria, anch’essa evidentemente all’oscuro dell’esistenza del rapporto Stern, si è affrettata a dare manforte al Premier producendo uno studio che quantifica in 180 miliardi di euro fino al 2020 il costo che peserebbe sulle imprese italiane a causa delle nuove misure, a fronte di benefici per l’ambiente che l’associazione degli industriali (notoriamente esperta in questioni ambientali) si sente in diritto di definire “infinitesimali”.

Comunque niente paura, anche se alla fine Berlusconi non riuscisse a spuntarla, in Italia non cambierà comunque nulla e per la gioia di Confindustria si continuerà ad inquinare come e più di prima. Basti che nel nostro Paese anche quando non esisteva lo spauracchio della crisi finanziaria non è mai stato fatto alcuno sforzo per diminuire le emissioni di CO2 e nonostante L’Italia si fosse impegnata nell’ambito del protocollo di Kyoto a ridurre le proprie emissioni di gas serra del 6,5% entro il 2012 abbiamo continuato a marciare in direzione diametralmente opposta a quanto convenuto e le emissioni di Co2 sono aumentate del 13% nel periodo 1990/2005, senza che nulla abbia mai lasciato presagire la possibilità di un’inversione di tendenza.»di Marco Cedolin. «Silvio Berlusconi da quando è tornato alla guida del Paese sta irrimediabilmente soffrendo di... more

Glaciers of British Columbia could be gone in 150 years

Climate experts are warning that if carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions aren't reduced, most of B.C's glaciers will be melted within 150 years.

"If the current projections for the increasing levels of CO2 are accurate then most of the glaciers in B.C. and Alberta will be gone in 150 years," said Brian Menounos, an associate professor of geography at University of Northern B.C.

Menounos is part of a team of scientists carrying out a $2.1 million study on behalf of the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences to see what effects global warming is having on glaciers in the Pacific Northwest. The study is expected to be completed in 2010.

"Of course we don't know what will happen in the next 150 years and what humans are going to do about CO2 emissions, but if current trends are maintained the only ice fields left will be some remnants in the St. Elias Mountains," he said.

The St. Elias Mountain range straddles Alaska, Yukon and the far northern part of B.C.

Menounos said scientists are monitoring glaciers to determine what's being accumulated in the winter when it snows against what melts in the summer heat.

"We know CO2 emissions will change both the total snowfall and summer temperatures. The majority of climate scientists claim that human activity has a role in climate change," he said.

One of the most important aspects of the study is to determine what will happen if the glaciers continue melting and the effects this will have on available water resources.

"Land managers need to know how much of that water resource is still there. In 2014 the water treaty between the U.S. and Canada will have to be negotiated again and both parties will have to come to the table and say 'based on this information we're going to have to agree on how the water is allocated.'

"Canada can't say we're going to take it all because a lot of it flows into Washington state," he said.

Menounos said the 1990s were "not good years for glaciers" and there was significant melting but this decade temperatures have been cooler on average, he said.

"But we know the melting of the large ice masses in the coastal mountains is contributing substantially to the rise in sea levels," he said.

Gone in 150 years, with people feeling the effects of it until that time especially regarding the availability of water. That is unless the people of the world wake up this next year. We are not taking this seriously enough on a global scale even with all of the evidence coming forward.
