The iTunes app store has hundreds of great programs that serve genuinely useful purposes, whether for work or for play. It also has its fair share of junk -- dumb, gimmicky applications that have no real reason for being, even if some of them are free, writes Chris Maxcer. Here are 10 apps -- or types of apps -- that do little else than take up space in the store and make it harder to find the good stuff.

By just about any measure, the Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) Latest News about Apple iPhone App Store has been an astounding success. It reportedly did US$30 million in business in its first 30 days, during which time users downloaded 60 million applications. For a store that didn't exist before the launch of the 3G Latest News about 3G iPhone in July, that's pretty damn impressive.

Still, by lighting up the world with so many cool third-party iPhone applications, Apple has also opened the door to deeper, dumber issues -- like the $999 "I Am Rich" application that eight people managed to buy before Apple had the sense to yank it from the store altogether. There's a walkthrough online, but basically it just offers the "rich" (or formerly rich) owner a glowing graphic of a ruby and a super-stupid "I deserv it (sic)" mantra.

While the "I Am Rich" app is clearly quite useless, how might other apps make the grade? The criteria are totally subjective, of course, but basically it comes down to this: If the apps don't fulfill a real need, if their implementation is pathetic, or if they are just plain dumb and stupid, they make the list. The app is just taking up space and wasting our collective lives as we try to dig through the crap to find the true gems in the App Store.

A few people, of course, may find some of these apps indispensable, in which case Apple should create a new category or at least filter them for the rest of us. Either way, in the spirit of painfully dumb iPhone apps, here are the 10 stupidest iPhone tricks currently available in the iTunes App Store.

1. iDemocrat and iRepublican: These two free apps show graphics of a red, white and blue donkey or elephant along with the proclamation "Proud to be Democrat" or "Proud to be Republican." The seller noted on the app description: "When I did this, I wanted it to be something you download, install and bring to all your election rallies and hold it out like [a] torch." Seriously. Because that's what we want to see on TV ... the next leader of the free world looking out over a sea of people holding up their iPhones with glorious red, white, and blue donkeys and elephants.

So yeah, some of these Apps not only get in my way as I try to find useful applications, they offend the sense of progress that comes with innovative devices like the iPhone. Maybe Jobs is anticipating the moment when he'll be able to look out over the audience at the next Macworld conference in January and see a bunch of virtual lighters swaying in tune with his next-big-thing announcement.

IPhone feature could enable Apple to kill apps remotely

A developer has discovered code within the iPhone 2.0.x firmware that appears to allow Apple to blacklist apps, which could result in their removal from the iPhone without user interaction.

Developer and iPhone book author Jonathan Zdziarski revealed via iPhone Atlas methods by which Apple still maintains tight control over what is on the iPhone. The code lies in the CoreLocation portion of the software, and points to a URL, https://iphone-services.apple.com/clbl/unauthorizedApps, which appears to contain a blacklist.

Going to that address triggers the loading of code that lists apps by name, the date of entry into the list, and a description. Only one entry appears there now, though it could be some type of placeholder.

"This suggests that the iPhone calls home once in a while to find out what applications it should turn off. At the moment, no apps have been blacklisted, but by all appearances, this has been added to disable applications that the user has already downloaded and paid for, if Apple so chooses to shut them down," Zdziarski said.

Assuming Zdziarski's theory is correct, just how often the iPhone calls back to Apple to check this list is unknown. However, such a feature would expand upon another iPhone capability to prevent application execution through certificate revocation.

There, Apple can revoke the certificate in order to prevent the application from executing. Other mobile operating systems include such functionality as well, including Symbian and the BlackBerry OS. "Jailbroken" iPhones bypass this requirement, enabling the execution of applications not approved through Apple's own process.

While Apple defends its right to do so for security reasons, no doubt, such a practice rubs some the wrong way.

But at least one person says that the positives outweigh the negatives. "Is this something to be outraged about? Yes, it's creepy that iPhone can phone home and deactivate your apps, but the risk-reward is clearly in Apple's favor," Larry Dignan writes for ZDNet this morning.

Dignan points out that while the deletion of apps may annoy customers, on the upside, Apple gains some credibility in the enterprise sector for its remote wiping, it has some control over security, and it also has more control over its reputation -- something the company protects vigorously.

So far, Apple has used neither the certificate revocation nor this alleged blacklist for any application. While it has removed items from the App Store's catalog, those items continue to operate on phones on which they're already installed.

Top 10 Requests for CDC iPhone App (in no particular order)

1. The ability to post images, video, articles that I find while browsing iPhone's Safari browser and with a click of a button, "Make It Current". It may not be possible to physically add this button to Safari, so the only way I can imagine this being done is opening the current.com app, typing in the URL of the video/article/image and clicking "Make Current". This would be a lot of work to memorize or write down the URL path. (unless a copy/paste feature from Safari to the CDC app happens) Although copy/paste on the iPhone would make A LOT of Apps more useful.

2. The ability to watch all videos that are on current.com. It wouldn't be too difficult to take all of our Pods and export them into a iPhone friendly format, but would be tougher to do for viewer-uploaded clips that are in Flash or from a webcam. If we had the technology to take any clip from CDC and automatically transcode it on the fly for the iPhone would be awesome.

3. As many features from the regular CDC site like checking out the TV schedule, suggesting articles to friends, voting up and down submissions.

4. an interface that is user-friendly for the small iPhone screen. (big text, easy to touch buttons, limited gfx (banners, ads, backgrounds that will take longer to load on 3G and EDGE)

5. using GPS location services, find out what area I'm in and display articles/videos/images that are "Current" in this area. This would be AWESOME. (a feature similar to this on our regular site where the user types in their zip code and has a section of CDC for local news)

6. The ability to bookmark/Favorite CDC content that i like and would like to access in the future without having to search for it

7. Poll of the day! I love polls.

8. Obviously the ability to leave comments would be nice.

9. A mini "best-of" pod for people who don't have time to watch several pods on their phone (maybe while on the bus or on their lunch break) A 5 minute pod that shows highlights from infoMania, supernews, Fix, pods? Update this on a daily/weekly basis.

10. The ability to take a picture with your iPhone and upload it to current.com. (although there should be a reason to upload a photo - don't want CDC to be filled with crappy cell phone pics) Maybe if there was a CDC Group of "Show us your car" or "live from Macworld 2009" (where any first hand photos/experiences would be VERY "Current" and interesting to the current community)
