    • Nigerian consortium in for Newcaste United

Newcastle United chairman looks like getting his wish of selling up as fast as possible.

A Nigerian consortium hoping to buy Newcastle United has apparently made a confirmed bid for the troubled club.

To make matters even more interesting, apparently they are not the only interested party (I know I was surprised).

Rumours that Mike Ashley received an email telling him he must send them a cheque immediately so that they can release the funds in their account are entirely without foundation.

    • 9 Universities working to ensure bright students from poorer homes take degree cou...

Nine English universities are to work together to ensure bright pupils from poorer homes take up degree courses.

Birmingham, Bristol, Leicester, King's College London, Leeds, Warwick, Newcastle, Southampton and Exeter universities will be "pooling" talent.

Under the scheme, students identified as able by one university's access programme would be able to apply to the other institutions taking part.

The initiative will begin for students applying to start degrees in 2010.

The institutions will continue with their own widening participation programmes, but will be formally able to recommend students to the other universities in the scheme.

Lesley Braiden, director of marketing and communications at Newcastle University, said the pooling scheme built on what was being done already.

"We're happy to be involved in this scheme - we're only too conscious of the fact that there are young people who have the potential for higher education study but have problems in their context," she said.

The scheme formalised universities' work to try to ensure these people did not "fall through the net", she added.

Professor Steve Smith, vice-chancellor of Exeter University, said the initiative reached out to students from the state school sector who got good A-level results but did not apply to the most selective universities.

"What this is about is universities as a group trying to work together to recognise each other's compact schemes," said Professor Smith.

Compact schemes are initiatives in which universities work with schools to provide master classes, summer schools or visits for students.

"If a student was on a compact scheme with Exeter and wanted to apply to another university, it could mean that university treating the student as if they had been involved in their own compact scheme."

Universities Secretary John Denham highlighted the initiative at the Labour Party conference in Manchester.

"No-ne should feel their ambitions are blocked," he told delegates.

"Ten year ago too many of our kids though 'university - not for me' now more than half say 'I want to go to university'.

"I am delighted that some of our most selective institutions are working together to make progress in widening participation."

The Russell Group, which represents the top research-intensive institutions, said it was fully committed to working with the government on these proposals.

The National Union of Students said they were "fantastic".

President Wes Streeting said there were too many universities "at the higher end of the market" that did not seem a realistic prospect for students from non-traditional backgrounds.

    • Kevin Keegan in shock Newcastle resignation

It has emerged that Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan has quit his position after holding talks with the club's owner, Mike Ashley.

Apparently he quit after several, much needed, transfers failed to materialise by the end of the transfer window at midnight last night.

I guess when you say you're club's not gonna win any trophies, you've already got half your foot out of the door...

    • Firemen cruise in big red truck to pick up girls

Now I always kinda thought this was a perk of the job, but it seems that's not quite the case.

After seeing a buxom-blonde stepping out of the back of a firetruck in Newcastle, an angry cabbie took a picture on his mobile and has lodged a complaint.

An investigation into the incident has been launched after he cllaimed he saw fire crews 'shouting and leering at girls,' which he thinks is putting lives at risk because the firefighters are 'loiteriing.'

'They are going round town getting whistled at by women and they are hanging out the windows of the fire engines.'

I think someone might needs their jealousy extinguishing.

    • Murdered Chinese students linked to betting scam

The two Chinese Newcastle University graduates murdered last weekend could be linked to a complex web betting scam, Northumbrian Police believe.

The couple, Xi Zhou and Zhen Xing Yang, were found dead by police on Saturday. Police said the two were tortured for some time before being killed. Bizarrely, the couple's cat was found dead in a bucket in the bathroom. Detective Superintendent Steve Wade said it was one of the worst crime scenes he'd ever seen.

Wade said: "A possible motive for the killing is beginning to emerge... Community intelligence supported by the examination of computer equipment and mobile call data has shown that both of the victims have been involved in fraudulent activity which has angered and upset a number of people. We are currently investigating this as a possible motive for the killings."

    • Nike drop Newcastle United's disgraced football thug Joey Barton

Violent offender footballer Joey Barton has been dropped by the American sporting giant Nike for bringing their brand into "disrepute" following his six-month prison sentence for a violent attack in Liverpool city centre.

While Kevin Keegan elected to keep him in his £3 million a year Newcastle United job, Nike have talen a stand by calling a halt to his £40,000 annual boot sponsorship deal.

"Whilst Joey Barton is a talented footballer, we cannot condone or accept what he did and his contract with us has been terminated," said a Nike sportsperson.

Barton is a repeat violent offender and committed his last offence while on bail. He last served time after punching a man to the ground and pummelling his victim up to 20 times with his fists in an attack caught on CCTV in Liverpool last December.

He is also serving a four-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, after a separate conviction for a "ferocious" training ground attack on former Manchester City colleague Ousmane Dabo, which left his victim unconscious and bleeding.

Should Barton have been dropped from Newcastle as well as Nike? If footballers are role models for young people, what message does Kevin Keegan's acceptance of Barton's violent behaviour send out? Why are footballers seemingly exempt from taking responsibility for their actions? What should be done about Barton?

    • Badboy Barton out of prison early

After being sentenced to six months in jail for what the judge described as a "violent and cowardly" assault on an unsuspecting teenager, Premiership footballer Joey Barton has been released from jail after serving only a third of his sentence.

The feisty Newcastle United midfielder pleaded guilty to assault and affray charges at Liverpool Crown Court on May 20th, but since then Barton has also been handed a four-month suspended sentence for beating up one of his teammates when he played at Man. City.

You think Barton's early release from prison, and the reported second chance given by Newcastle Manager Kevin Keegan, sets a bad example for kids who look up to football players?
