Proposition 8, a California constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage, has attracted an unlikely assortment of foes, including Vice President Cheney’s daughter Mary, Brad Pitt, and Steven Spielberg. Yesterday, Google also took the unusual step of jumping in, noting that because it has a “great diversity of people and opinions” at the company, it rarely takes “a position on issues outside of our field, especially not social issues”: Proposition 8, a California constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage, has attracted an unlikely assortment of foes, i... more

    • Just one more reason not to vote Republican

Sometimes it does not matter if you have good customer service…. Especially if you are also a gay friendly business….

Seem according to KMSP in Minnesota’s Twin Cities the Virginia Republican delegation to next weeks Republican National Convention canceled their order of The Rake magazine's Secrets of the City guide because it includes a section for gays and lesbians.

The publication is a guide to various attractions in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

In Original cancellation request e-mailed from Melissa Busse, Virginia's Lt. Governor political director sent to Tom Bartel, of The Rake Busse said….

" I am so terribly sorry to do this, especially when the both of you have been so "out of your way" helpful, generous and easy to work with. But, we need to cancel the order for 150 of the "Secrets of the City" guidebooks.

Thanks for sending a copy to me so expediently, Tom. Upon looking at it, though, having a section dedicated solely to GLBT will be a BIG problem for many of our folks. We simply can't hand them out.
Please still bill us for the copy sent along with shipping, though.
      Again, I'm so sorry."

I guess they were unhappy with the guide because it did not list one hot spot already well known to some Republican Leaders... The Men's Room at the Minneapolis Airport....

    • India's anti-gay law challenged

Gay-rights activists are lobbying for the repeal of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, a Victorian-era law banning homosexuality. As several high courts in a number of states and cities in India are currently reviewing the law, it looks like their efforts might be successful!

Arvind Narrain, an attorney for the Alternative Law Forum, a Bangalore-based human rights group, explains how 377 affects the lives of gay, lesbian and transgender Indians: "What that translates to, from 'legalese,' is that any forms of sex that are non-procreative in nature is a criminal offense. What it translates to on a ground level is it is basically used and enforced against people who are not heterosexual. So it is used very much against gay men, lesbians and transgender people in a big way to extort, blackmail and harass."

Under 377, LGBT individuals can face large fines and up to 10 years in prison and criminal gangs often threaten individuals to 'out' them unless they receive large sums of money. In addition, disapproving parents of gays and lesbians who live together sometimes charge their children with other unrelated crimes, such as kidnapping, in order to break up the union.

"We have gone to court many times where we actively cover up the nature of the relationship between two women because we do not want to complicate the case. You just want to get rid of the kidnapping charge so they can go on and live their lives. And that is because of a law like Section 377. If we were not actively criminalized by such a law, then we would be able to go to court and say, 'They are lovers. They are adults. And they have the right to live with each other,'" said Arasu.

India's health minister, Anbumani Ramadoss, has proven to be significant ally for gay activists. Speaking at an international AIDS conference this past week in Mexico City, Ramadoss called for a repeal of 377. He said the law tends to drive gays and lesbians under ground, hindering the country's efforts to prevent the spread of HIV and treat those with HIV/AIDS.

However, there is also considerable opposition to the Indian gay-rights movement. Prakash Jawadekar, a spokesperson of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, for instance, downplayed the significance of gay rights and stressed that there are more pressing problems facing India: "Basically these issues of gay marriages and gay rights are not very important issues in this country. We have various other issues for which we are fighting. We are the party of spreading more Indianness amid families and with regular marriages, male-female marriages. That is what the order of the day is."

A decision regarding the possible repeal of 377 is expected later this year.

    • Obama pledges support for gay families

Barack Obama has pledged to work towards the elimination of discrimination against LGBT families if elected.

The new statements regarding LGBT issues were made in a response to a letter by the Family Equality Council (FEC) asking candidates to outline their plans to "recognise, respect, protect and celebrate all of the loving families [they] seek to represent."

John McCain, who failed to respond to the FEC letter, said in an interview with the New York Times last month that he does not believe gay people should adopt children.

Obama, on the other hand, emphasised: "I'll be a President that stands up for American families; all of them. The desire to build a life with a loved one, to provide for a family and to have children who will grow and thrive; these are desires that all people share, regardless of race, sex, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity."

"We ... have to do more to support and strengthen LGBT families. Because equality in relationship, family, and adoption rights is not some abstract principle; it's about whether millions of LGBT Americans can finally live lives marked by dignity and freedom."

Senator Obama listed more funding for after-school programmes, the abolition of the federal ban on same-sex marriage, an end to discrimination against LGBT families and "equal treatment in our family and adoption laws" as goals for his administration.

    • Obama says 'yes' to gay adoption

Barack Obama has expressed his support for same-sex couples' right to adopt children.

In a letter to the Family Equality Council, Obama writes: " ... we have to eliminate discrimination against LGBT families ... [and] we have to extend equal treatment in our family and adoption laws."

While McCain and his wife, Cindy, have an adopted child, he said to the New York Times, "I think that we've proven that both parents are important in the success of a family, so no, I don't believe in gay adoption."

According to the Family Equality Council, same-sex parents are raising 4% of all adopted children in the United States as well as 3% of all children in foster care.

"Three homes and five vehicles were sprayed with anti-gay slogans in the 2800 block of NW 7th Ave in Wilton Manors early Friday morning.

One resident was using soap and water to wash out the anti-gay messages sprayed on his property that said "fag".

He explained to CBS4 Reporter Ted Scouten that he's not gay, which is all the more worrying why he was a target.

''There's no reason for this to happen,'' Aaron Challancin said. ``We didn't do anything to anyone. We're normal people trying to live normal lives.

    • We the People... Lesbiatopia's Editors Explore the Wisconsin Gay Marrage Law

Over on another part of Current TV, debate is hot over a State of Wisconsin law that says if a same-sex couples from Wisconsin goes to California to get married, it is a criminal offense that threatens them with a $10,000 fine or up to 9 months in jail (or both) if they do marry in California.

This law was passed decades ago, says it is illegal to enter into a marriage outside the state if that marriage is not legal in Wisconsin and was enacted to prevent underage couples from crossing state lines to marry.

In 2006 Wisconsin voters passed a constitutional same-sex marriage ban; gay marriage is not legal in Wisconsin.

But up till last month this law was not really a problem Lesbians and Gays in that state because the only state that had gay marriage was Massachusetts. Their law essentially has a caveat in it that says same-sex marriages preformed in Massachusetts are only legal outside the state of Massachusetts if that state also recognizes same-sex marriage. In other words, if I got married in Massachusetts, my marriage would only be recognized in California.

We Feel this a very serious Constitutional Issue... and one with not only ramification's for the LGBT community but everyone in America....

    • Obama opposes California same-sex marriage ban

This is good news. Obama has spent the last few weeks moving to the center. It's nice to see him making a strong statement on this. From the San Francisco Chronicle:

Democratic Sen. Barack Obama has announced his opposition to a November ballot measure that would ban same-sex marriage in California, a move that puts gay rights front and center in the 2008 presidential campaign.

In a letter to San Francisco's Alice B. Toklas Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Democratic Club Sunday, the presumptive presidential nominee said he opposed "the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution" and similar efforts in other states.

"It's great to see Senator Obama's statement, which is consistent with what he has said in the past about allowing each state to make its own decision," said Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality for All, which is heading the Prop. 8 opposition. "Is it ideal that he doesn't support same-sex marriage? No. But it's important when political leaders say gay and lesbian couples should be treated equally."

Earlier last week, Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, the GOP standard-bearer in November, took the other side. He told officials of Protect Marriage, a coalition that gathered 1.1 million signatures for the California measure, that he backed their efforts "to recognize marriage as a unique institution between a man and a woman."

    • Obama, The Gay President !!!

Bill Cliton was proud to be called "The black president". Would Obama be proud to be called
      "The gay president"

While Obama keeps proclaming that he wants to bring the country together, he has no hesitation to insult 70% of the American voters by saying first that marriage is between a man and woman and at the same time courting the gay activists lobby by opposing a California constitutional amendment that would do exactly the opposite of what Obama is saying when he is not in San Francisco

Is this typical of Politician double talk or lawyers white lies ? It is both

His arrogance in treating people that value traditional marriage as stupid is for every one to see.

On May 15th, we experienced another "Pearl Harbour" with the hijacking of the California constitution by 4 activist judges.

On November 4th, we will have an Hiroshima moment with positive votes on a constitutional amendment that will recognize that marriage is between a man and woman in California, Florida and Arizona.

Mr Obama should know that you do not create peace and harmony by supporting a minority of radical homosexual activists that want to destroy marriage.

They could have all the benefits they want with civil unions but have decided to declare a cultur war on America instead.

Mr Obama who opposes the war in Iraq and want to end it after somebody else did the job is supporting this one.

    • Obama, McCain On Gay Marriage

McCain and Obama both have said that they oppose granting legal recognition to same-sex marriages, but they differ slightly on what they will do for it as president.

A proposed amendment to the state constitution will be on the ballot in California on Nov. 4 that will say, “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”
Barack Obama is against the proposed California state constitutional amendment.
John McCain favors the proposed amendment to the California constitution.

The 1996 federal law called the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), that was signed by President Clinton, says that no state shall be required to recognize any same-sex marriage performed in another state.
Obama said in late 2003 that he was against repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. But he switched his view on that question early in 2004 and said he would work to repeal DOMA.
McCain did say in 2006 that if the Supreme Court were to strike down DOMA, “then, and only then, would the problem justify Congress making the momentous decision” to amend the Constitution to outlaw same-sex marriages.
McCain voted for DOMA in 1996. Obama was not a member of the Senate at that time.

Both men voted against the proposed amendment to the United States Constitution in 2006 that would have defined marriage as only between one man and one woman.

Both McCain and Obama have said they believe the states should decide their marriage policies. Both men say they support civil unions, rather than full-fledged legal marriages between same-sex couples.

Neither candidate wants to alienate voters who support marriage rights for same-sex couples. And gay and lesbian campaign donors can be a powerful force, particularly in the Democratic Party.

    • Republicans Lighting The Gay Reichstag Fire Again…. Federal Marriage Amendment Re-...

Historically when times are not good in this country the blame tends to fall on the party that holds the White House.

With the terrible economic news of factory closings in the heartland, and numbers on home foreclosures, joblessness and gas prices heading upward everyday, many folks in this country are feeling pretty dissatisfied.

According to a recent Pew Research poll measuring the attitudes of the middle class, for the first time in 50 years of polling, a majority of Americans believe they are falling behind economically.

If you add in the extraordinarily un-popular, mismanaged war in Iraq, that in essence was started under false pretenses by the current Republican Administration, (one strongly supported by Republican Presidential Nominee John McCain,) things are not looking all that rosy for the GOP this fall.

    • Wisconsin gays face jail if they marry in California

If same-sex couples from Wisconsin go to California to get married, they may face a $10,000 fine, 9 months in jail, or both.

"Wisconsin law makes it a criminal offense to enter into a marriage outside the state if that marriage were illegal in Wisconsin. The law was passed decades ago to prevent underage couples from crossing state lines to marry, but it could be used against same-sex couples, Glenn Carlson of Fair Wisconsin told The Capital Times newspaper in Madison."

Wisconsin voters approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in 2006.

While no one has been prosecuted under the law, Lambda Legal (the gay and lesbian legal association that fights for equal rights) posted a warning to Wisconsin residents on their website http://www.lambdalegal.org/publications/factsheets/fs_m...

Other states, including Delaware have laws prohibiting residents from circumventing state law by traveling to another state, but Wisconsin's punishment is the harshest.
