Barack Obama may have helped California Proposition 8 gay marriage ban pass

Around 70 per cent of the African-American voters who overwhelmingly backed Mr Obama also approved Proposition 8, helping pass the controversial ballot measure despite a small majority of whites voting against the ban on same-sex unions. Hispanic and Asian voters were split on the issue.

The state's black turnout jumped to 10 per cent of the electorate, up from 6 per cent in 2004, as voters inspired by Mr Obama flocked to the polls for the first time. The Democratic candidate took the state with 61 per cent of the popular vote.

Although the president-elect opposed the gay marriage ban, it appears his supporters may have helped pass the measure that was vociferously opposed by many white Democrats.

The news is a blow to gay rights campaigners, who had hoped California would be the vanguard for the legalisation of same-sex marriage across the US. More than 18,000 homosexual couples have wed in the state since its supreme court allowed gay marriages earlier this year. The status of those unions is now in doubt.

On the day that Mr Obama swept to power, voters handed a number of defeats to gay campaigners.

Amendments to ban gay marriage were also approved in Arizona and Florida, and Arkansas voters approved a measure banning unmarried couples from serving as adoptive or foster parents

But gay rights campaigners, who spend tens of millions of dollars fighting to oppose Proposition 8, have vowed not to admit to defeat. A petition to dismiss the measure on the grounds that decision of such importance should be taken by state legislatures rather than voters has already been filed to the Supreme Court.

"We pick ourselves up and trudge on," said Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights. "There has been enormous movement in favour of full equality in eight short years. Overwhelming Pride in my Country Underlined by Deep Shame in my State

Let me start by saying that I am humbled by the events of this evening and I could not think of a more fitting scenario in order to make my first post here on the White Rabbit Cult. I am so proud of my country to be able to see through the bigotry and petty lies that have been a constant smear across our television screens this election season and elect the man that truly is the best choice to lead our country out of the narrow-minded past and slingshot it into the open-minded future. This country was hungry for change and their plates shall runneth over. This is a pivotal election that has the potential to change our country for the rest of history.

That being said, I can’t get over the sickening feeling in my stomach that is hindering me from fully enjoying this miraculous event. I am a resident of the state of Arizona, and while I may not like the idea that I am in the minority in this state, I have always accepted it as a simple difference of opinion. I am someone who has always enjoyed political debate and conversations with people of both like and different minded opinions. However, while America as a whole took 1 giant step forward tonight, Arizona took two steps back. The first being the Yes vote on Prop 102 to ban same-sex marriage (more on that in my next post), and the second the nausea-inducing crowd at McCain’s consession speech. What I saw tonight during McCain’s concession speech struck me so deep into my gut that it was hard to get up after hearing it.

I am so ashamed that in the state that I so happily call my home, there were crowds so disrespectful to yell and boo while John McCain was trying to salvage the little honor and dignity he had left after his campaign dragged him through the mud. How despicable and disrespectful do you have to be to tarnish this amazing moment in history with your disgusting bigotry and hate? You people make me utterly sick to my stomach and anyone who reads this blog that may have been one of those aforementioned “hecklers”, for lack of a better word, please, I beg of you to send me your address so I can come and knock on your door and spit in your face to show you the disrespect that you have shown Barack Obama, the President Elect of the United States of America, and the millions of people who dared to dream and believe in hope in times of great peril.

Did you hear Obama’s crowd at the mention of McCain? They cheered. That is what decent people do. Unfortunately, I can no longer call my fellow Arizonans decent people because they just showed to the world that they do not deserve the label. I hope by tomorrow the joy will drown out the sadness, anger, and shame that I feel right now. Even through this all, I guess that’s the difference: I still have hope. Thank you, America. You have made the right choice. Good Night Everyone. I am ashamed of America

The national ballot results are in, and let me tell you--I am disgusted and ashamed of my fellow "Americans". Ballot measure after ballot measure, bigotry won by a narrow margin.

How dare anyone who voted against same-sex marriage call themselves Americans? Or those voting to keep same-sex couples from adopting children? How DARE you?

How dare you burn our Constitution and Bill of Rights, how dare you toss aside everything this country is supposed to stand for? Whatever happened to equality under the law? What deranged, hateful idea got into your heads that you had the right to control the personal relationships of others? Whether it be in the name of God, family, or tradition, the real reason was hate.

America is not a free country, it seems, and only half the country desires it to be free. The rest of you, it seems, would prefer an ultra-right wing country where "freedom" is only allowed for the Christian, conservative, traditional minority.

If marriage is not a right guaranteed to all consensual adults, who are engaged in legal relationships (remember, folks, homosexual relationships ARE legal!), then it is not a right for you, either. Supporters of the bans against gay marriage, I'm sure you would gladly give up your 'privelege' to be married, then? Until you've earned it as a group?

You bigoted, hateful people amaze me...

Many of you whined and said that you weren't against gays, but you were for children and families. You used children for your hateful, bigoted politics. Any idea who else did this?

That's right, Adolf Hitler.

Adolf Hitler, too, claimed to want to "defend" marriage. He himself used children for his own political gains, and perhaps that's where the campaigners for these freedom-killing measures got their strategy: you can convince a population of anything, he said, by doing it in the name of the children. He brainwashed children into singing for his cause (sound familiar?) and used the cause of children and family as a cover for his policies.

Hitler, too, hated gays, though he took it a step further and killed thousands of them because they didn't fit into his narrow worldview. It was done in the name of family, children, and traditional "morals".

When 52% of the people get to tell the rest how to live their lives, you know freedom is dead. I only hope that someday, 52% of the people strip you of your rights to be married. You deserve it.

No on Prop H8

Think twice before voting for hate with Prop H8 (ie, Proposition 8, if you're really that slow). There is no legitimate reason to take the human rights away from human beings and Americans. Let's understand why Prop H8 is simply wrong and unconstitutional.

Arguing that "homosexuality isn't natural" is irrelevant. Homosexuality is legal. Nearly everything we do is unnatural and ‘natural’ has nothing to do with marriage and the legal system. Arguments based on morality and the Bible are equally invalid. All arguments that homosexuality is immoral (and this argument assumes that those making it would be for outlawing homosexuality, not just marriage) arise from religion, which has no place in the legal system. And again, homosexuality is legal.

"Same-sex marriage destroys 'real' marriage" is a baseless argument. Despite the fact that one marriage cannot possibly destroy marriage, it continues to be used despite there never being any back up for it. Britney Spears' sham marriages have done more to degrade marriage. Same sex marriage does not steal your marriage. No one is forcing you not to get married, no one is forcing you to marry someone you don't like, no one is undoing your marriage. To say that it is outright dishonest and low.

Same-sex marriage has nothing to do with families. Many advocates of Prop H8 claim that its about families and that children need a mother and father. Yet single parenthood is entirely legal and to suggest that people may not adopt or have children if they so choose is an incredible violation of personal freedom. However, legally marriage has nothing to do with children. It is simply two consenting adults choosing to be together.

Same-sex marriage will not lead to pedophile marriages or bestiality marriages, as some nutcases claim.These people dishonestly and knowingly ignore the fact that those types of relationships are in the first place illegal and in the second illegal because one party in each of those kinds of relationships cannot give consent. Same-sex marriage does not really change the definition of marriage. In fact, it is Prop H8 that takes rights away from homosexual families and redefines marriage as between a man and a woman only. Prop H8 will take away the rights of children and partners to see their loved ones on the death bed and to get the same rights we all take for granted. Prop H8 hurts children, not the other way around.

Homosexuals have done nothing illegal and are consenting adults. All they want is the same respect and legal status our society sees no problem in giving to shams of marriages like those of Britney Spears. Why is it that those people can marry whoever they please without reason yet homosexuals may not? Why is it that homosexuals must meet the requirement to being able to have children or even wanting to, yet heterosexuals must not? It is blatant dishonesty and double standards. Prop H8 proponents say they support it because the Supreme Court overturning "the will of the people" was undemocratic yet they are turning around and taking private rights away from people.

If Prop H8 passes, I urge everyone to REFUSE to respect marriage. If freedom does not belong to everyone, it belongs to no one, and the same applies to marriage. Marriage is a right, not a privilege, and it means nothing unless it belongs to all consensual human beings. Let's make marriage actually mean something and continue to allow those who truly want it--unlike shams like Britney Spears--have it. If you're still not convinced, think carefully. If you vote yes on Prop H8, you are saying it is OK for the government to control your marriage. You have no right to complain if other people decide that your marriage is illegitimate and no longer legal because it is your second marriage. That means you're fine with the government taking away your right to marry because you cannot bear children.
