Pins & Threads installation in London
We've probably all done that craft project in school, where you push pins into a cork board and make patterns by winding bits of coloured thread between them. Well Debbie Smyth has taking this to a completely new level with her installation 'Pins & Threads', which uses sewing pins and black thread to draw amazing images across several canvas panels, as well as across empty space.
The installation is currently on display at the London Design Festival. We've probably all done that craft project in school, where you push pins into a cork board and make patterns by winding bits of ... more -
Replacing landmarks with cheap souvenirs
Michael Hughes loves to travel and visit the world’s most famous landmarks. He also loves to take creative, quirky pictures in which he replaces these monuments with cheap souvenirs.
Hughes started this hobby back in 1998 and has accumulated a rich collection of over 100 fun images using this blending technique in 200 countries he visited.
From a plastic Eiffel Tower, to a coffee cup showing the Statue of Liberty, and a souvenir fridge magnet of the Golden Gate Bridge. His creativity has no limits.
“I noticed coffee cups from a shop near the Statue of Liberty had the statue printed on, so I poured my drink on the floor, and positioned it in front of the statue,” Michael explained how he discovered this technique.
“Since then, taking the pictures has developed into a hobby and a passion to the point where I have been taking trips recently just to photograph a souvenir next to its landmark.” Michael Hughes loves to travel and visit the world’s most famous landmarks. Official undone by tight trouser crackdown
A senior official in South Sudan who ordered a crackdown on young women wearing tight trousers has been sacked, officials said Saturday.
Police arrested scores of women -- many on their way home from church -- in the capital Juba last week on charges of disturbing the peace. Officers said their choice of clothing proved they belonged to youth gangs.
Police acted after Juba county commissioner Albert Pitia Redentore banned any public display of gang behavior that, he said, threatened traditional values.
A government statement said Redentore was removed form office by President Salva Kiir Friday.
Gender minister Mary Kiden said the crackdown was unconstitutional and reminded her of the restrictions on women's dress enforced in the Muslim north of the country.
South Sudan fought the north in a two-decade war that was partly fueled by resistance to the north's Islamic Sharia law. A senior official in South Sudan who ordered a crackdown on young women wearing tight trousers has been sacked, officials said Saturda... more -
